An Anglican (Church of Ireland) by conversion, King was a strident critic of John Toland and the clerical superior of Jonathan Swift. Politically King was pivotal to the emergence of the modern concept of the liberal nation state: his defence of the Church of Ireland led him to develop a theory of national rights and privileges that would influence thinkers such as Thomas Paine. King, a staunch conservative, was nonetheless an honest intellectual, a modest and devoted servant of his church and his nation and was at the very heart of the European Enlightenment. 410 0$aEighteenth-century political biographies ;$vno. 7. 606 $aStatesmen$zIreland$vBiography 606 $aChurch and state$zIreland$xHistory$y17th century 606 $aChurch and state$zIreland$xHistory$y18th century 607 $aIreland$xHistory$y1649-1775 615 0$aStatesmen 615 0$aChurch and state$xHistory 615 0$aChurch and state$xHistory 676 $a941.506092 700 $aFauske$b Christopher J.$f1963-$01472970 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790683603321 996 $aA political biography of William King$93686011 997 $aUNINA LEADER 05806nam 22006975 450 001 9910886992403321 005 20250807153251.0 010 $a9783031596155 010 $a3031596153 024 7 $a10.1007/978-3-031-59615-5 035 $a(CKB)34868840800041 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31651893 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31651893 035 $a(DE-He213)978-3-031-59615-5 035 $a(EXLCZ)9934868840800041 100 $a20240907d2024 u| 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aGirmitiya Culture and Memory $eNavigating Identity, Tradition, and Resilience across Continents /$fedited by Priyanka Chaudhary, Neha Singh 205 $a1st ed. 2024. 210 1$aCham :$cSpringer Nature Switzerland :$cImprint: Palgrave Macmillan,$d2024. 215 $a1 online resource (338 pages) 311 08$a9783031596148 311 08$a3031596145 327 $a1. The intersections of dis/re-location and memory have always been a focus of scholarly interest and the volume envisages the roots of migration and culture, life stories, narratives, and personal anecdotes. It further accentuates Girmitiya struggles, politics of displacement, relationships with the homeland and host land, oral traditions, repercussions, and retention of the archival sites. The cross-examination of memories helps in building a framework to study the varied experiences of the Girmitiya community. In this volume, through a blend of historical and scholarly discourse, we embark on a journey to unearth the layers of meaning embedded within the Girmitya experience. The tales of Girmitya migration amplifies marginalized voices and illuminates the enduring resilience. By chronicling the experiences of the indentured migration, we pay homage to the pioneers, recognize the intricacy of their toils, and commemorate the continuing legacy.
