Many of these controversies manifested themselves in the representation of the historical and mythological women whose voices were heard on the Venetian operatic stage. Drawing upon a complex web of early modern sources and ancient texts, this engaging study is the first comprehensive treatment of women, gender, and sexuality in seventeenth-century opera. Wendy Heller explores the operatic manifestations of female chastity, power, transvestism, androgyny, and desire, showing how the emerging genre was shaped by and infused with the Republic's taste for the erotic and its ambivalent attitudes toward women and sexuality. Heller begins by examining contemporary Venetian writings about gender and sexuality that influenced the development of female vocality in opera. The Venetian reception and transformation of ancient texts-by Ovid, Virgil, Tacitus, and Diodorus Siculus-form the background for her penetrating analyses of the musical and dramatic representation of five extraordinary women as presented in operas by Claudio Monteverdi, Francesco Cavalli, and their successors in Venice: Dido, queen of Carthage (Cavalli); Octavia, wife of Nero (Monteverdi); the nymph Callisto (Cavalli); Queen Semiramis of Assyria (Pietro Andrea Ziani); and Messalina, wife of Claudius (Carlo Pallavicino). 606 $aOpera$zItaly$zVenice$y17th century 606 $aWomen in opera 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aOpera 615 0$aWomen in opera. 676 $a782.1/082/094531 700 $aHeller$b Wendy Beth$01005726 801 0$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248101803316 996 $aEmblems of eloquence$92312895 997 $aUNISA 999 $p$140.25$u09/08/2017$5Music LEADER 02688nas 2200493 n 450 001 990008933720403321 005 20240229084551.0 011 $a0366-483X 035 $a000893372 035 $aFED01000893372 035 $a(Aleph)000893372FED01 035 $a000893372 091 $2CNR$aP 00001978 100 $a20090724b19241984km-y0itaa50------ba 101 0 $afre 102 $aIT 110 $aauu-------- 200 1 $aBulletin volcanologique 207 1$a1924-1984 210 $aNapoli$cIstituto di geologia applicata 440 0$1001000893280$12001$aBulletin of volcanology 530 0 $aBulletin volcanologique 675 $a551.21 675 $a550 676 $a551.21 712 02$aInternational Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth?s Interior 801 0$aIT$bACNP$c20090723 859 4 $uhttp://acnp.cib.unibo.it/cgi-ser/start/it/cnr/dc-p1.tcl?catno=1016&person=false&language=ITALIANO&libr=&libr_th=unina1$zBiblioteche che possiedono il periodico 901 $aSE 912 $a990008933720403321 958 $aBiblioteca del Gruppo Geomineralogico - Università degli studi di Napoli Federico II$b1924-1931;1937-1975;1978-1984.$c1970;$eSc. 33$fGM1 958 $aBiblioteca Centralizzata.
