Lowry demonstrates that anti-imperialist resistance movements overseas significantly shaped the course of Wilhelmine domestic politics between 1897 and 1906. In 1898 and 1900, for example, consequences of Chinese, Cuban, and Samoan resistance permitted Berlin to steer two large naval laws through the Reichstag, enabling the government to garner critical Centrist votes through pro-Catholic gestures overseas, rather than having to yield the Anti-Jesuit Law at home. By contrast, after 1903 costly uprisings throughout German-occupied Africa generated acute Centrist fiscal concerns, and African civilian protests against colonial misrule aroused missionary and Centrist ire. Lowry emphasizes that the ensuing Reichstag dissolution of 1906 arose much more directly from African factors than previous scholarship has recognized"--Provided by publisher. 410 0$aStudies in Central European histories ;$vv. 62. 606 $aChurch and state$zGermany$xHistory 606 $aAnti-imperialist movements$zGermany$xColonies$xHistory 606 $aGovernment, Resistance to$zGermany$xColonies$xHistory 607 $aGermany$xPolitics and government$y1888-1918 607 $aGermany$xColonies$xPolitics and government 607 $aGermany$xColonies$zAfrica$xPolitics and government 615 0$aChurch and state$xHistory. 615 0$aAnti-imperialist movements$xColonies$xHistory. 615 0$aGovernment, Resistance to$xColonies$xHistory. 676 $a909/.09712430821 700 $aLowry$b John S.$01684823 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910808603303321 996 $aBig swords, Jesuits, and Bondelswarts$94056476 997 $aUNINA
