Providing coverage of theatre, opera, vaudeville, minstrelsy, movies, radio and television, he examines the evolution of audience practices as each genre supplanted another as the primary popular entertainment. Based on original historical research, this volume exposes how audiences made themselves through their practices - how they asserted control over their own entertainments and their own behaviour. Importantly, Butsch articulates two long-term processes: pacification and privatization. Whereas during the nineteenth century, overactive audiences represented a threat to civic order through their unruly behaviour, in the twentieth century, audiences have become more passive, dependent upon and controlled by media messages. This timely study serves as an important contribution to communication research, as well as American cultural history and cultural studies. 410 0$aCambridge Studies in the history of mass communication. 606 $aPerforming arts$xAudiences$zUnited States 606 $aRadio audiences$zUnited States 606 $aTelevision viewers$zUnited States 615 0$aPerforming arts$xAudiences 615 0$aRadio audiences 615 0$aTelevision viewers 676 $a791/.0973 700 $aButsch$b Richard$f1943-$01016129 801 0$bUkCbUP 801 1$bUkCbUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996248228703316 996 $aThe making of American audiences$92376199 997 $aUNISA LEADER 04324nam 2200349 450 001 9910774826603321 005 20230328175929.0 035 $a(CKB)4920000001372869 035 $a(NjHacI)994920000001372869 035 $a(EXLCZ)994920000001372869 100 $a20230328d2021 uy 0 101 0 $aita 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aGiuseppe Maria Crespi e il Gran Principe Ferdinando de' Medici /$fElisa Zucchini 210 1$aFlorence :$cFirenze University Press,$d2021. 215 $a1 online resource (404 pages) 225 1 $aPremio Ricerca "Citta? di Firenze" 311 $a88-5518-357-5 327 $aIntroduzione-- Caratteri peculiari del rapporto fra pittore e principe 19-- 1; Zanotti, Luigi Crespi e la memoria del Serenissimo Principe 19-- 2. Crespi was a leading figure of the prince's artistic view, according to which arts and sciences guide to wisdom and virtue. Their appreciation for bizarre iconographies and Venetian style painting is clarified by ideas inspired by Seneca on ingenuity and picturesque frenzy. The characteristics of conciseness, brilliance, coexistence of archaism and innovation associate Ferdinando's artistic and musical patronage, influencing his favourite artists and composers and perhaps Handel's art collection. 410 0$aPremio Ricerca "Citta? di Firenze". 676 $a759.5 700 $aZucchini$b Elisa$01348801 801 0$bNjHacI 801 1$bNjHacl 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910774826603321 996 $aGiuseppe Maria Crespi e il Gran Principe Ferdinando de' Medici$93086447 997 $aUNINA
