At the same time, the book shows that intoxication, whether in the strict medical sense or in its less technical meaning ("strong excitement," "trance," "ecstasy"), is central to the ways in which modernity, and literary modernity in particular, functions and defines itself. In both its theoretical and practical implications, intoxication symbolizes and often comes to constitute the condition of the alienated artist in the age of the market. The book also offers new readings of the Confessions and some of De Quincey's posthumous writings, as well as an extended analysis of his relatively neglected diary. The discussion of De Quincey's work also elicits new insights into his relationship with William and Dorothy Wordsworth, as well as his imaginary investment in Coleridge. 606 $aAuthorship$xPsychological aspects 606 $aModernism (Literature)$zEngland 606 $aSelf in literature 606 $aLITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh$2bisacsh 615 0$aAuthorship$xPsychological aspects. 615 0$aModernism (Literature) 615 0$aSelf in literature. 615 7$aLITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh. 676 $a828/.809 700 $aClej$b Alina, $4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0457736 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910154598803321 996 $aA Genealogy of the Modern Self$92868581 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01829nas 2200601- 450 001 9910263736303321 005 20240804213016.0 035 $a(OCoLC)456232128 035 $a(CKB)1000000000257132 035 $a(CONSER)--2023243088 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000257132 100 $a20090603b19982013 --- - 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aScottish journal of healthcare chaplaincy 210 1$aAberdeen, Scotland :$cScottish Journal of Healthcare Chaplaincy,$d1998-2013. 215 $a1 online resource 311 $a1463-9920 531 10$aScott. j. healthc. chaplain. 606 $aPastoral medicine$vPeriodicals 606 $aPastoral care 606 $aChaplains, Hospital 606 $aPastoral Care 606 $aChaplaincy Service, Hospital 606 $aPatients$xpsychology 606 $aMédecine pastorale$vPériodiques 606 $aSoins pastoraux 606 $aAumôniers d'hôpitaux 606 $aPastoral medicine$2fast 608 $aPeriodical 608 $aperiodicals.$2aat 608 $aPeriodicals$2fast 608 $aPeriodicals.$2lcgft 608 $aPériodiques.$2rvmgf 615 0$aPastoral medicine 615 0$aPastoral care. 615 0$aChaplains, Hospital. 615 12$aPastoral Care 615 22$aChaplaincy Service, Hospital 615 22$aPatients$xpsychology 615 6$aMédecine pastorale 615 6$aSoins pastoraux. 615 6$aAumôniers d'hôpitaux. 615 7$aPastoral medicine 676 $a362.10425 712 02$aScottish Association of Chaplains in Healthcare, 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910263736303321 996 $aScottish Journal of Healthcare Chaplaincy$92015975 997 $aUNINA
