Dissension, defined as a propositional attitude of the speaker's disagreement is deemed to be highly threatening to the social image of an individual and is to be uttered using specific Face-work strategies and/or a higher degree of redress for the social image. After a discussion of the concepts 'Dissension' and 'Face-work', the corpus and methodology, the results of an analysis of about eight hours of recorded conversation and about 370 occurrences of Dissension are presented. According to their scope, they were classified into four categories, which proved relevant for the set of 38 Face-work strategies found to express them, as well as the elements employed in their linguistic expression. No specific linguistic means for expressing Dissension was found, although most cases display semantically negative lexical components. Linguistic elements from many word classes as well as devices such as Deixis manipulation were used for Face-work. The results are also interpreted in regard to the relationship between Dissension, its different categories and the several strategies used to express them. An appendix presents all occurrences of Dissension found in the corpus as well as a detailed examination of their categories and linguistic forms, Face-work strategies and linguistic means used to convey them. 410 0$aLinguistische Arbeiten (Max Niemeyer Verlag) ;$v457. 606 $aGerman language$xHonorific 606 $aGerman language$xSpoken German 606 $aDialogue analysis 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aGerman language$xHonorific. 615 0$aGerman language$xSpoken German. 615 0$aDialogue analysis. 676 $a430.141 686 $aGC 5210$2rvk 700 $aMeireles$b Selma Martins$01040926 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910460608903321 996 $aDissension and face-work strategies in German dialogues$92464150 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00822nam a2200241 i 4500 001 991004164329707536 005 20020506114620.0 008 010315s1935 it ||| | fre 035 $ab10616925-39ule_inst 035 $aEXGIL134878$9ExL 040 $aBiblioteca Interfacoltà$bita 082 0 $a842.7 100 1 $aHugo, Victor$0444801 245 13$aLe Rhin /$cVictor Hugo ; avec introduction et notes d'Armand Landini 260 $aRoma :$bSignorelli,$c1935 300 $a108 p. ;$c19 cm. 700 1 $aLandini, Armando 907 $a.b10616925$b02-04-14$c28-06-02 912 $a991004164329707536 945 $aLE002 Busta C 10 2$g1$i2002000780386$lle002$o-$pE0.00$q-$rl$s- $t0$u0$v0$w0$x0$y.i10703743$z28-06-02 996 $aRhin$9231948 997 $aUNISALENTO 998 $ale002$b01-01-01$cm$da $e-$ffre$git $h3$i1
