The same is true of our metaphysical ecosystem--the values, principles, attitudes, beliefs, and shared stories on which we have founded our society. In Bird on an Ethics Wire, Margaret Somerville explores the values needed to maintain a world that reasonable people would want to live in and pass on to their descendants. Somerville addresses the conflicts between people who espouse "progressive" values and those who uphold "traditional" ones by casting her attention on the debates surrounding "birth" (abortion and reproductive technologies) and "death" (euthanasia) and shows how words are often used as weapons. She proposes that we should seek to experience amazement, wonder, and awe to enrich our lives and helps us to find meaning. Such experiences, Somerville believes, can change how we see the world and live our lives, and affect the decisions we make, especially regarding values and ethics. They can help us to cope with physical or existential suffering, and, ultimately put us in touch with the sacred--in either its secular or religious form--which protects what we must not destroy. Experiencing amazement, wonder and awe, Somerville concludes, can also generate hope, the oxygen of the human spirit, without which our spirit dies. Both individuals and societies need hope, a sense of connection to the future, if the world is to make the best values decisions in the battles that constitute the current culture wars."--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aSocial values 606 $aEthics 606 $aCulture conflict 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSocial values. 615 0$aEthics. 615 0$aCulture conflict. 676 $a303.372 700 $aSomerville$b Margaret$0868892 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910460578603321 996 $aBird on an ethics wire$92153473 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01244nam0-2200385---450- 001 990000843310203316 005 20080919135907.0 035 $a0084331 035 $aUSA010084331 035 $a(ALEPH)000084331USA01 035 $a0084331 100 $a20020104d1996----y0itay01 ba 101 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $aa 00||| 200 1 $a<> Molise tra le righe$erassegna bibliografica 1990-1994$fGiorgio Palmieri, Antonio Santoriello$gpresentazione di Natalino Paone$gpremessa di Antonio Arduino 210 $aAgnone$cIRESMO$d[1996] 215 $a253 p.$d24 cm 607 $aMolise$xBibliografia$z1990-1994 676 $a016.945719$v20 700 1$aPALMIERI,$bGiorgio$f<1958-2017>$01438902 701 1$aSANTORIELLO,$bAntonio$0551054 801 0$aIT$bsalbc$gISBD 912 $a990000843310203316 951 $aXIII D 215$b132878 LM$cXIII D 959 $aBK 969 $aUMA 979 $aPATTY$b90$c20020104$lUSA01$h1709 979 $aPATTY$b90$c20020104$lUSA01$h1711 979 $c20020403$lUSA01$h1729 979 $aPATRY$b90$c20040406$lUSA01$h1658 979 $aCOPAT3$b90$c20050223$lUSA01$h1535 979 $aCAPRIOLO$b90$c20080919$lUSA01$h1359 996 $aMolise tra le righe$93600886 997 $aUNISA LEADER 00772nam0-22002771i-450 001 990005543300403321 005 20251201095307.0 035 $a000554330 035 $aFED01000554330 035 $a(Aleph)000554330FED01 035 $a000554330 100 $a19990530d1958----km-y0itay50------ba 101 0 $ager 105 $af-------00--- 200 1 $a<>Demareteion$fWalter Dorn 210 $aBremen$cWalter Dorn$dc1958 215 $a30 p., 7 tav.$d21 cm 225 1 $aOpus Nobile$eMeisterwerke der antiken Kunst$v7 700 1$aSchwabacher,$bWilly$0212681 801 0$aIT$bUNINA$gRICA$2UNIMARC 901 $aBK 912 $a990005543300403321 952 $aARCH.
