This book summarizes presentations and discussions from the two-day international workshop held at UC Berkeley in March 2015, and derives questions to be addressed in multi-disciplinary research toward a new paradigm of nuclear safety. The consequences of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in March 2011 have fuelled the debate on nuclear safety: while there were no casualties due to radiation, there was substantial damage to local communities. The lack of common understanding of the basics of environmental and radiological sciences has made it difficult for stakeholders to develop effective strategies to accelerate recovery, and this is compounded by a lack of effective decision-making due to the eroded public trust in the government and operators. Recognizing that making a society resilient and achieving higher levels of saf ety relies on public participation in and feedback on decision-making, the book focuses on risk perception and mitigation in its discussion of the development of resilient communities. 606 $aRadiation protection 606 $aRadiation?Safety measures 606 $aNuclear energy 606 $aEnvironmental sciences 606 $aEnvironmental policy 606 $aEnvironmental economics 606 $aEngineering ethics 606 $aEffects of Radiation/Radiation Protection$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/U13003 606 $aNuclear Energy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/113000 606 $aEnvironmental Science and Engineering$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/G37000 606 $aEnvironmental Policy$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X33040 606 $aEnvironmental Economics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W48000 606 $aEngineering Ethics$3https://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/E14030 610 $adecision making 610 $anuclear safety 615 0$aRadiation protection. 615 0$aRadiation?Safety measures. 615 0$aNuclear energy. 615 0$aEnvironmental sciences. 615 0$aEnvironmental policy. 615 0$aEnvironmental economics. 615 0$aEngineering ethics. 615 14$aEffects of Radiation/Radiation Protection. 615 24$aNuclear Energy. 615 24$aEnvironmental Science and Engineering. 615 24$aEnvironmental Policy. 615 24$aEnvironmental Economics. 615 24$aEngineering Ethics. 676 $a363.7 700 $aJoonhong Ahn$4auth$01355880 702 $aAhn$b Joonhong$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aGuarnieri$b Franck$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 702 $aFuruta$b Kazuo$4edt$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edt 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910231248503321 996 $aResilience: A New Paradigm of Nuclear Safety$93359963 997 $aUNINA
