In this debate, Dienstag mirrors the celebrated dialogue between Rousseau and Jean D'Alembert on theatre, casting Cavell as D'Alembert in his view that we can learn to become better citizens and better people by observing a staged representation of human life, with Dienstag arguing, after Rousseau, that this misunderstands the relationship between original and copy, even more so in the medium of film than in the medium of theatre. The argument is developed further by essays from Clare Woodford, Tracy B. Strong, Margaret Kohn, Davide Panagia and Thomas Dunn, to which Dienstag responds in the concluding chapter, 'A reply to my critics'. 410 0$aCritical powers. 606 $aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects 606 $aMotion pictures$xPhilosophy 606 $aMotion pictures$xPlots, themes, etc 608 $bElectronic books. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xPolitical aspects. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xPhilosophy. 615 0$aMotion pictures$xPlots, themes, etc. 676 $a791.436581 700 $aDienstag$b Joshua Foa$f1965-$0900486 712 02$aManchester University Press, 801 2$bUkMaJRU 801 2$bAuAdUSA 801 2$bUkMaJRU 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910136987303321 996 $aCinema, democracy and perfectionism$92011861 997 $aUNINA
