Despite a large amount of work that has been done on the topic of ancient epistolography, material and formatting conventions have remained underexplored, mainly due to the difficulty of accessing images of letters in the past. Thanks to the increasing availability of digital images and the appearance of more detailed and sophisticated editions, we are now in a position to study such aspects. This book examines the development of letter writing conventions from the archaic to Roman times, and is based on a wide corpus of letters that survive on their original material substrates. The bulk of the material is from Egypt, but the study takes account of comparative evidence from other regions of the Graeco-Roman world. Through analysis of developments in the use of letters, variations in formatting conventions, layout and authentication patterns according to the sociocultural background and communicational needs of writers, this book sheds light on changing trends in epistolary practice in Graeco-Roman society over a period of roughly eight hundred years. This book will appeal to scholars of Epistolography, Papyrology, Palaeography, Classics, Cultural History of the Graeco-Roman World. 410 0$aMateriale Textkulturen 606 $aBriefe 606 $aEpistolografie 606 $aEpistolography 606 $aGraeco-Roman Egypt 606 $aGriechisch-Römisches Ägypten 606 $aLetters 606 $aPapyrus 606 $apapyrus 606 $3(DE-601)104675365$3(DE-588)4008240-4$aBrief$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)105195634$3(DE-588)4197552-2$aKonvention$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)105826847$3(DE-588)4113791-7$aGriechisch$2gnd 606 $3(DE-601)106204971$3(DE-588)4044571-9$aPapyrus$2gnd 606 $aHISTORY / Ancient / General$2bisacsh 610 $aEpistolography. 610 $aGraeco-Roman Egypt. 610 $aLetters. 610 $apapyrus. 615 4$aBriefe. 615 4$aEpistolografie. 615 4$aEpistolography. 615 4$aGraeco-Roman Egypt. 615 4$aGriechisch-Römisches Ägypten. 615 4$aLetters. 615 4$aPapyrus. 615 4$apapyrus. 615 7$aBrief 615 7$aKonvention 615 7$aGriechisch 615 7$aPapyrus 615 7$aHISTORY / Ancient / General. 676 $a930 686 $aAM 45200$2rvk 700 $aSarri$b Antonia, $0962080 712 02$aDeutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft$4fnd$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fnd 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a996309057503316 996 $aMaterial Aspects of Letter Writing in the Graeco-Roman World$92181309 997 $aUNISA
