Esso trae le sue origini dalla cultura giapponese che ha creato un "clima" di business diverso da quello di ogni altra economia avanzata. Non è un caso che l'insieme di tecniche produttive e manageriali, in seguito definite "snelle" (lean), siano nate e si siano sviluppate in Giappone. Questo lavoro ha l'obiettivo di analizzare ed evidenziare le caratteristiche della lean production per comprendere i legami tra la cultura e il sistema imprenditoriale nipponici e l'insieme di queste filosofie e tecniche gestionali. Per comprendere il sistema gestionale giapponese è necessario analizzare il funzionamento della supply chain in quel paese e capire cosa i giapponesi fanno e come lo fanno all'interno delle loro fabbriche.
