First, it is based on a very large and recent database, covering 165 countries from 1981 to 2012. Second, it conducts a robustness analysis across different estimation techniques. Third, the empirical search is expanded by including potential saving determinants identified by theory but not previously considered in the empirical literature. Fourth, the paper explores differences in saving behavior nesting the 2008-10 crisis period and four different country groups. Finally, it also searches for commonalities and differences in behavior across national, private, household, and corporate saving rates. The results confirm in part existing research, shed light on some ambiguous or contradictory findings, and highlight the role of neglected determinants. Compared to the literature, we find a larger number of significant determinants of saving rates, using different estimators, for different periods and country groups, and for different saving aggregates. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2014/204 606 $aSaving and investment 606 $aConsumption (Economics) 606 $aSavings accounts 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $a'Panel Data Models$2imf 606 $aSpatio-temporal Models'$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Consumption$2imf 606 $aSaving$2imf 606 $aWealth$2imf 606 $aFiscal Policies and Behavior of Economic Agents: General$2imf 606 $aAggregate Factor Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aPrivate savings$2imf 606 $aIncome$2imf 606 $aPersonal income$2imf 606 $aConsumption$2imf 606 $aTerms of trade$2imf 606 $aSaving and investment$2imf 606 $aEconomics$2imf 606 $aEconomic policy$2imf 606 $anternational cooperation$2imf 615 0$aSaving and investment. 615 0$aConsumption (Economics) 615 0$aSavings accounts. 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$a'Panel Data Models 615 7$aSpatio-temporal Models' 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Consumption 615 7$aSaving 615 7$aWealth 615 7$aFiscal Policies and Behavior of Economic Agents: General 615 7$aAggregate Factor Income Distribution 615 7$aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aPrivate savings 615 7$aIncome 615 7$aPersonal income 615 7$aConsumption 615 7$aTerms of trade 615 7$aSaving and investment 615 7$aEconomics 615 7$aEconomic policy 615 7$anternational cooperation 676 $a339.43 700 $aGrigoli$b Francesco$01127643 701 $aHerman$b Alexander$01584938 701 $aSchmidt-Hebbel$b Klaus$058385 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910788177703321 996 $aWorld Saving$93869078 997 $aUNINA
