In 1919, Jessie packed a trousseau, and declared herself "married to Palestine." Yet Sampter's own life and body hardly matched typical Zionist ideals: while Zionism celebrated the strong and healthy body, Sampter spoke of herself as "crippled" from polio and plagued by weakness and sickness her whole life; while Zionism applauded reproductive women's bodies, Sampter never married or bore children. In fact, she wrote of homoerotic longings and had same-sex relationships we would consider queer. Though Jessie Sampter was in many ways quite distinctive, analyzing her life illuminates a sometimes invisible aspect of the human condition: our embodied selves do not always neatly line up with our religious or political ideals. In its telling of the lives of Sampter, the book pursues an embodied method of learning about the past. It draws not only on texts and material objects-the things scholars usually interpret through reading and seeing-but also what we apprehend by other senses, feelings, and experiences"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aAuthors, American$y20th century$vBiography 606 $aZionists$zUnited States$vBiography 606 $aAuthors with disabilities$zUnited States$vBiography 606 $aLesbian authors$zUnited States$vBiography 615 0$aAuthors, American 615 0$aZionists 615 0$aAuthors with disabilities 615 0$aLesbian authors 676 $a818.5209 686 $aSOC032000$aSOC029000$2bisacsh 700 $aImhoff$b Sarah$01276160 801 0$bNDD 801 1$bNDD 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910617314103321 996 $aThe lives of Jessie Sampter$93007176 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03631oam 2200757I 450 001 9910790651803321 005 20230803021947.0 010 $a1-138-83677-X 010 $a1-315-84070-7 010 $a1-317-88366-7 010 $a1-317-88367-5 024 7 $a10.4324/9781315840703 035 $a(CKB)2550000001131099 035 $a(EBL)1474411 035 $a(OCoLC)870591151 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001174002 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12521666 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001174002 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11106089 035 $a(PQKB)11451124 035 $a(OCoLC)868972546 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1474411 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1474411 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10786369 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL530808 035 $a(OCoLC)897463259 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001131099 100 $a20180706e20132002 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe First World War peace settlements, 1919-1925 /$fErik Goldstein 210 1$aLondon ;$aNew York :$cRoutledge,$d2013. 215 $a1 online resource (168 p.) 225 0 $aSeminar studies in history 300 $a"First published 2002 by Pearson Education Limited"--T.p. verso. 311 $a0-582-31145-4 311 $a1-299-99557-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Title; Copyright; Dedication; Contents; Introduction to the Series; Acknowledgements; Chronology; Maps; 1.
