Overview of Migrant Rights Indicators -- $tReferences -- $tIndex 330 $aMany low-income countries and development organizations are calling for greater liberalization of labor immigration policies in high-income countries. At the same time, human rights organizations and migrant rights advocates demand more equal rights for migrant workers. The Price of Rights shows why you cannot always have both. Examining labor immigration policies in over forty countries, as well as policy drivers in major migrant-receiving and migrant-sending states, Martin Ruhs finds that there are trade-offs in the policies of high-income countries between openness to admitting migrant workers and some of the rights granted to migrants after admission. Insisting on greater equality of rights for migrant workers can come at the price of more restrictive admission policies, especially for lower-skilled workers. Ruhs advocates the liberalization of international labor migration through temporary migration programs that protect a universal set of core rights and account for the interests of nation-states by restricting a few specific rights that create net costs for receiving countries. The Price of Rights analyzes how high-income countries restrict the rights of migrant workers as part of their labor immigration policies and discusses the implications for global debates about regulating labor migration and protecting migrants. It comprehensively looks at the tensions between human rights and citizenship rights, the agency and interests of migrants and states, and the determinants and ethics of labor immigration policy. 606 $aForeign workers$xCivil rights 606 $aForeign workers$xLegal status, laws, etc 606 $aLabor laws and legislation 606 $aHuman rights 606 $aEmigration and immigration$xEconomic aspects 606 $aEmigration and immigration$xGovernment policy 606 $aEmigration and immigration law 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aForeign workers$xCivil rights. 615 0$aForeign workers$xLegal status, laws, etc. 615 0$aLabor laws and legislation. 615 0$aHuman rights. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration$xEconomic aspects. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration$xGovernment policy. 615 0$aEmigration and immigration law. 676 $a331.6/2 700 $aRuhs$b Martin$01043510 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910453085003321 996 $aThe price of rights$92468531 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03299oam 2200625I 450 001 9910458021103321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a1-134-33709-4 010 $a1-280-17111-1 010 $a0-203-39064-4 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203390641 035 $a(CKB)1000000000360037 035 $a(EBL)200575 035 $a(OCoLC)437061367 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000143728 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11157623 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000143728 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10121117 035 $a(PQKB)10986757 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC200575 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL200575 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10162762 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL17111 035 $a(OCoLC)61366301 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000360037 100 $a20180331d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe economics of Palestine $eeconomic policy and institutional reform for a viable Palestinian state /$fedited by David Cobham and Numan Kanafani 210 1$aLondon ;$aNew York :$cRoutledge,$d2004. 215 $a1 online resource (315 p.) 225 1 $aRoutledge studies in development economics ;$v40 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 $a0-415-64914-5 311 $a0-415-32761-X 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aBook Cover; Title; Copyright; Contents; Figures; Tables; Contributors; Abbreviations; 1 Introduction; 2 The choice of trade regime depends on multiple other factors; Discussion; 3 Alternative currency arrangements; Discussion; 4 Budgetary and fiscal policy; Discussion; 5 The role of the financial sector; Discussion; 6 Company law and corporate governance in Palestine; Discussion; 7 Structuring a pension scheme for a future Palestinian state; Discussion; Discussion; 8 Strategies for economic development, the role of Gaza and the future of the refugee camps; Discussion; 9 Foreign aid strategy 327 $aDiscussion10 Absorbing returnees in a viable Palestinian state; Discussion; Discussion; 11 Incomplete contracts, the port of Gaza and the case for economic sovereignty; Discussion; Index 330 $aThis book aims to set the intense political debates on one side in order to do some serious economic analysis. It assumes that a sovereign independent Palestinian state comes into existence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and proceeds to examine the economic policies and institutional reforms which would be appropriate for it. Key recommendations are that such a state should:* adopt a non-discriminatory trade regime* introduce a new currency with a currency board and later a hard peg to the euro* establish a new type of pension scheme combining universal and work-based elements
