Conclusion. This book examines the post-9/11 God debate in the West. Through a close study of prominent English God debaters Richard Dawkins, Karen Armstrong, Christopher Hitchens, and Terry Eagleton, Adrian Rosenfeldt demonstrates that New Atheist and religious apologist ideas and arguments about God, science, and identity are driven by mythic autobiographical narratives and Protestant or Catholic cultural heritage. This study is informed by criticism of the New Atheist polemic as being positivistic, and the religious apologists as propagating "sophisticated theology." In both cases, the God debaters are perceived as disassociating themselves from human lived experience. It is through reconnecting the God debaters' intellectual ideas to their cultural and social background that the God debate can be grounded in a recognisable human reality that eludes reductive distinctions and disembodied abstractions. Adrian Rosenfeldt is a teaching associate at La Trobe University and Melbourne University, Australia. His research interests and teaching involve classical sociology, cultural sociology, sociology of mental illness, modernism, and criminology. His current research focuses on different forms of humanism and identity-making as recognisable in the twenty-first century God debate.Religion and scienceSocial sciencesPhilosophyIdentity politicsReligion and SciencesSocial PhilosophyIdentity PoliticsReligion and science.Social sciencesPhilosophy.Identity politics.Religion and Sciences.Social Philosophy.Identity Politics.211.8211.80905Rosenfeldt Adrian1228996MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQ9910568261503321The God Debaters2852995UNINA03242nam 2200817Ia 450 991097351330332120241226111237.09786610369256978141293337714129333749781280369254128036925697807619498550761949852(CKB)2670000000259581(SSID)ssj0000163728(PQKBManifestationID)11178458(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000163728(PQKBWorkID)10118277(PQKB)10617248(MiAaPQ)EBC254646(OCoLC)61501033(StDuBDS)EDZ0000067569(Au-PeEL)EBL254646(CaPaEBR)ebr10080867(CaONFJC)MIL36925(OCoLC)437163182(FINmELB)ELB131284225054(FR-PaCSA)88869239(FRCYB88869239)88869239(EXLCZ)99267000000025958120050224d2005 fy 0engur|||||||||||txtccrGlobalization and belonging /Mike Savage, Gaynor Bagnall, Brian Longhurst1st ed.London SAGE2005London ;Thousand Oaks, Calif.
