Victor Bérard (1864-1931) was one of France’s greatest Homeric scholars, author of a celebrated translation of the Odyssey. His attempts to reconstruct Odysseus’ voyage remain as famous as his philological works. A member of the French School at Athens and director of the École pratique des hautes études, where he taught ancient geography, he was also a thoughtful and courageous observer of contemporary events: a Dreyfusard in France and a defender of the Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.
