Alutiiq artists carved the masks from wood or bark into images of ancestors, animal spirits, and other mythological forces; these extraordinary creations have been an essential tool for communicating with the spirit world and have played an important role in dances and hunting festivities for centuries. Giinaquq: Like a Face presents thirty-three full-color images of these fantastic and eye-catching masks, which have been preserved for more than a century as part of the Pinart Collection in a small French museum. These masks, collected in 1871 by a young French scholar of indigenous cultures, are presented for the first time in their complete cultural context, celebrating the rich history of the Alutiiq people and their artistic traditions.Giinaquq :comme un visage : les masques sugpiat de l'archipel de KodiakPacific Gulf Yupik EskimosMaterial cultureAlaskaKodiak IslandExhibitionsEskimo masksAlaskaKodiak IslandExhibitionsKodiak Island (Alaska)Social life and customsExhibitionsPacific Gulf Yupik EskimosMaterial cultureEskimo masks979.8/40899714Haakanson Sven D981248Steffian Amy F981249Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository.Chateau-Musee de Boulogne-sur-Mer.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910969530803321Giinaquq4419059UNINA01331nam0 22003493i 450 PAL021757920251003044307.0978889036260620090310d2008 ||||0itac50 baitaitz01i xxxe z01nI materiali lapidei dell'edilizia storica di Palermoconoscenza per il restauroR.
