Unlike other meditations on the subject, Flight Ways incorporates the particularities of real animals and their worlds, drawing philosophers, natural scientists, and general readers into the experience of living among and losing biodiversity. Each chapter of Flight Ways focuses on a different species or group of birds: North Pacific albatrosses, Indian vultures, an endangered colony of penguins in Australia, Hawaiian crows, and the iconic whooping cranes of North America. Written in eloquent and moving prose, the book takes stock of what is lost when a life form disappears from the world-the wide-ranging ramifications that ripple out to implicate a number of human and more-than-human others. Van Dooren intimately explores what life is like for those who must live on the edge of extinction, balanced between life and oblivion, taking care of their young and grieving their dead. He bolsters his studies with real-life accounts from scientists and local communities at the forefront of these developments. No longer abstract entities with Latin names, these species become fully realized characters enmeshed in complex and precarious ways of life, sparking our sense of curiosity, concern, and accountability toward others in a rapidly changing world.Critical perspectives on animals.BirdsExtinctionElectronic books.BirdsExtinction.598.138Van Dooren Thom1980-1056673Kryduba WayneSmith Mary AnnMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910458341003321Flight ways2491203UNINA00706nam a2200181 u 450099100430233770753620240108134353.0240108s1966 it r 2 000 0 ita dBibl. It focuses on the interrelationship between three subjects in analysis: Markov processes, semi groups and elliptic boundary value problems. The author studies a general class of elliptic boundary value problems for second-order, Waldenfels integro-differential operators in partial differential equations and proves that this class of elliptic boundary value problems provides a general class of Feller semigroups in functional analysis. As an application, the author constructs a general class of Markov processes in probability in which a Markovian particle moves both by jumps and continuously in the state space until it 'dies' at the time when it reaches the set where the particle is definitely absorbed. Augmenting the 1st edition published in 2004, this edition includes four new chapters and eight re-worked and expanded chapters. It is amply illustrated and all chapters are rounded off with Notes and Comments where bibliographical references are primarily discussed. Thanks to the kind feedback from many readers, some errors in the first edition have been corrected. In order to keep the book up-to-date, new references have been added to the bibliography. Researchers and graduate students interested in PDEs, functional analysis and probability will find this volume useful.Springer Monographs in Mathematics,1439-7382Functional analysisHarmonic analysisDifferential equations, PartialProbabilitiesFunctional Analysishttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M12066Abstract Harmonic Analysishttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M12015Partial Differential Equationshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M12155Probability Theory and Stochastic Processeshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/M27004Functional analysis.Harmonic analysis.Differential equations, Partial.Probabilities.Functional Analysis.Abstract Harmonic Analysis.Partial Differential Equations.Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes.519.233Taira Kazuakiauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut59537MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910299969203321Semigroups, boundary value problems and Markov processes1101548UNINA
