This book analyzes some of the most well-known and fiercely discussed concepts of the digital age from a historical perspective, showing how many of them have pre-digital roots and how they have changed and still are constantly changing in the digital era. Written by leading authors in media and communication studies, the chapters historicize 16 concepts that have become central in the digital media literature, focusing on three main areas. The first part, Technologies and Connections, historicises concepts like network, media convergence, multimedia, interactivity and artificial intelligence. The second one is related to Agency and Politics and explores global governance, datafication, fake news, echo chambers, digital media activism. The last one, Users and Practices, is finally devoted to telepresence, digital loneliness, amateurism, user generated content, fandom and authenticity. The book aims to shed light on how concepts emerge and are co-shaped, circulated, used and reappropriated in different contexts. It argues for the need for a conceptual media and communication history that will reveal new developments without concealing continuities and it demonstrates how the analogue/digital dichotomy is often a misleading one.Studies in Digital History and Hermeneutics HISTORY / Study & TeachingbisacshHistory.fastCommunication concepts.Digital age.History.Media studies.HISTORY / Study & Teaching.302.2309Aasman Susanctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBalbi Gabrielectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBalbi Gabrieleedthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtBenecchi Eleonoractbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBolin Göranctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBory Paoloctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBourdon Jérômectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbBrennan Edwardctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbDay Good Katiectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbFickers Andreasctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbFortunati Leopoldinactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbHanley Monikactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbHeijden Tim van derctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbKaun Annectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbKittler Jurajctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbKoenen Erikctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbLöblich Mariactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbMunoriyarwa Allenctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbMusiani Francescactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbNatale Simonectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbO'Sullivan Johnctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbRibeiro Nelson Costactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbRibeiro Nelson Costaedthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtRospocher Massimoctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbSchafer Valériectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbSchafer Valérieedthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtSchwarzenegger Christianctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbSchwarzenegger Christianedthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtSlootweg Tomctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbThierry Benjaminctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbTreré Emilianoctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbTrudel Dominiquectbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbVenema Niklasctbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbWang Erikactbhttps://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/ctbUniversity of Luxembourgfndhttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/fndDE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK996439751903316Digital Roots2570496UNISA
