L’essentiel des données présentées dans cet ouvrage provient de deux campagnes de fouilles menées à Annecy, en 2001, puis en 2005, sur les terrains de l’ancienne caserne des chasseurs alpins du 27e BCA - quartiers de Galbert -, soit une surface fouillée de 1,6 ha. Il est désormais possible d’approcher l’évolution de l’urbanisation à la marge orientale de l’agglomération de Boutae, entre le milieu du ier siècle av. J.-C. et le ve siècle. Au début du ier siècle, par le biais d’un réseau viaire, la trame urbaine est, en effet, présente à Galbert où se développe bientôt un quartier artisanal structuré en parcelles, mais aussi deux établissements manifestement organisés sur un tout autre modèle. À côté de ces espaces intégrés au complexe urbain, une partie des terrains fouillés échappe à l’organisation parcellaire de la ville. Les données issues des fouilles, confrontées aux hypothèses anciennes, engagent à voir dans ces terrains l’extension d’un domaine privé, aux portes de la bourgade. Ce fundus se caractérise en particulier par des orientations divergentes, mais aussi par la présence d’un espace funéraire dont subsistent quatre tombes à crémation. L’une d’entre elles se distingue par un mobilier d’une richesse évidente - notamment une intéressante vaisselle de bronze - qui en fait à coup sûr la tombe d’un personnage privilégié décédé au début du Ier siècle, aristocrate d’origine allobroge ou nouvellement arrivé de Rome. Dans un secteur de friches urbaines, un second ensemble funéraire est, quant à lui, daté du ve siècle et regroupe une vingtaine d’individus dont les restes témoignent au contraire de conditions de vie particulièrement difficiles.
