Hélène Velasco-Graciet propose de considérer que les territoires, anciens ou émergents, sont aujourd'hui tributaires des temporalités et des mobilités des individus contemporains alors que les territoires de la première modernité avaient, jusqu'à il y a peu, la force de l'institution qui les avait fait naître, et la légitimité du temps long. Le rapport des individus au monde semble, aujourd'hui, déterminé par un nouvel imaginaire géographique selon lequel l'expérience territoriale multiple devient la règle à atteindre.
