Aus soziologischer Perspektive wird hingegen deutlich: Die viel diskutierte ›Ökonomisierung‹ der Krankenhäuser ist ein in sich widersprüchlicher Prozess. Robin Mohan zeichnet die Geschichte des Krankenhauses mithilfe einer an Marx, Weber und Bourdieu orientierten Gesellschaftstheorie der Ökonomisierung nach, die den Widerspruch von Gebrauchswert und Tauschwert zum verbindenden Leitmotiv erhebt. Ce conflit suscita pourtant un intérêt constant dans l’Europe du xviie siècle, tenue en haleine par les péripéties de ce siège interminable qui aboutit, en 1669, à la prise par les Ottomans de la capitale du Regno di Candia (aujourd’hui Héraklion). Des milliers de soldats, gentilshommes, aventuriers, gens sans aveux, combattirent les Turcs sous les bannières de Venise et du Pape, mus par des motivations fort diverses, allant du zèle religieux à la soif de gloire et d’aventure, en passant par la geste nobiliaire, le recrutement forcé ou la simple rapine. Le capitaine Pierre Domenisse (v. 1629-1710) a laissé pour sa part un précieux témoignage des quelques semaines qu’il passa en Crète à l’occasion du « secours » envoyé par Louis XIV aux Vénitiens, durant l’été 1669. La publication de son Mémoire des choses les plus remarquables qui se sont faites au voyage de Candie, plus de trois siècles après, offre l’occasion de se plonger au cœur de ce conflit qui, par bien des aspects, accompagna et consacra les derniers feux du mythe de croisade, si cher à Alphonse Dupront.
