On sidewalks, decade after decade, urbanites have socialized, paraded, and played, sold their wares, and observed city life. These many uses often overlap and conflict, and urban residents and planners try to include some and exclude others. In this first book-length analysis of the sidewalk as a distinct public space, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris and Renia Ehrenfeucht examine the evolution of the American urban sidewalk and trace conflicts that have arisen over its competing uses. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples as well as case study research and archival data from five cities--Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Seattle--they discuss the characteristics of sidewalks as small urban public spaces, and such related issues as the ambiguous boundaries of their "public" status, contestation over specific uses, control and regulations, and the implications for First Amendment speech and assembly rights.Public spacesSidewalksElectronic books.Public spaces.Sidewalks.388.4/11Loukaitou-Sideris Anastasia1958-923732Ehrenfeucht Renia923733MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910454323103321Sidewalks2073054UNINA01914nas 2200601-a 450 99620729700331620240624173244.01839-3357ISSN/OCT2003(DE-599)ZDB2324885-3(OCoLC)229995438(CKB)1000000000025934(CONSER)--2011250735(EXLCZ)99100000000002593420010516b20012005 s-- -engur|||||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierAustralian journal of midwifery professional journal of the Australian College of Midwives IncorporatedMelbourne Australian College of Midwives2001-20051 online resource1445-4386 Australian midwifery :journal of the Australian College of MidwivesAUST J MIDWIFERYAUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF MIDWIFERYMidwivesAustraliaPeriodicalsObstetricsAustraliaPeriodicalsChildbirthPeriodicalsLabor, ObstetricMidwiferyChildbirthfast(OCoLC)fst00854780Midwivesfast(OCoLC)fst01020625Obstetricsfast(OCoLC)fst01042994AustraliaAustraliafasthttps://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRv8PPH7gCqhkJ8DK8bMPeriodicalPeriodicals.fastPeriodicals.lcgftMidwivesObstetricsChildbirthLabor, ObstetricMidwiferyChildbirth.Midwives.Obstetrics.Australian College of Midwives.JOURNAL996207297003316Australian journal of midwifery1895906UNISA
