Créé par Robert Debré, installé au château de Longchamp de 1949 à 1997, le CIE a promu la pédiatrie sociale, a dispensé des formations sanitaires et sociales, a soutenu des recherches dont certaines demeurent encore aujourd'hui des références, a développé le caractère transdisciplinaire des études sur les enfants. C'est ce croisement des approches qui a été la marque du CIE dans l'espace transnational de la cause des enfants construit au niveau mondial après la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
