It employs an autosegmental-metrical model of intonation to investigate the marking of aspects of information structure, concentrating on the Given-New dimension. It begins with an overview of the state of the art in the areas of intonation and information structure, and, since the term 'Givenness' has been used in the literature in diverging ways, provides a model of 'Givenness proper', focusing on the cognitive states of discourse referents, and how these states are expressed through the choice of words and their prosody. The empirical evidence provided here is based on German. It comprises the analysis of a read corpus and two perception experiments which show that the dichotomy of 'accented' versus 'unaccented' corresponding to 'New' versus 'Given' information is inadequate. In fact, there is evidence that a range of pitch accent types (including deaccentuation) can be mapped onto the gradient scale of Givenness degrees, with the pitch height on the accented syllable being the determining factor.Linguistische Arbeiten (Max Niemeyer Verlag) ;508.Intonation (Phonetics)German languageIntonationDiscourse analysisSemanticsPragmaticsCognitionElectronic books.Intonation (Phonetics)German languageIntonation.Discourse analysis.Semantics.Pragmatics.Cognition.197Baumann Stefan563945MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910463747303321The intonation of givenness2470150UNINA01851nam 2200445Ia 450 99639416550331620200824121728.0(CKB)4940000000115081(EEBO)2264173937(UnM)99897404e(UnM)99897404(EXLCZ)99494000000011508119950928d1656 uy |engurbn||||a|bb|The book of palmestry and physiognomy[electronic resource] Being brief introductions, both natural, pleasant, and delectable, unto the art of chiromancy, or manual divination, and physiognomy: with circumstances upon the faces of the signes.
