Studiando per diventare retore, cadde in un turbine di dubbi filosofici e psicologici, che lo portarono al manicheismo. Nel 383 si trasferì a Roma e poi a Milano per insegnare retorica. Nonostante esplorasse i sistemi filosofici classici, in particolare scetticismo e neoplatonismo, i suoi studi sulle lettere di Paolo insieme all’amico Alipio, e la predicazione del vescovo Ambrogio, portarono nel 386 alla sua importante conversione dalle credenze miste al cristianesimo.
