Conclusion --Bibliography --Index of Modern Authors --Index of Subjects --Index of Primary SourcesAlthough Roman centurions appear at crucial stages in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, the significance of the centurion's office for the development of Luke's story has not been adequately researched. To fill in that void, this study engages the relevant Greco-Roman and Jewish sources that reflect on the image of the Roman military and applies the findings to the analysis of the role of the Roman centurion in the narrative of Luke-Acts. It argues that contemporary evidence reveals a common perception of the Roman centurion as a principal representative of the Roman imperial power, and that Luke-Acts employs centurions in the role of prototypical Gentile believers in anticipation of the Christian mission to the Empire.Chapter 1 outlines the current state of the question. Chapter 2 surveys the background data, including the place of the centurion in the Roman military organization, the role of the Roman army as the basis of the ruling power, the army's function in the life of the civilian community, Luke's military terminology, and the Roman military regiments in Luke-Acts. Chapter 3 reviews Greco-Roman writings, including Polybius, Julius Caesar, Sallust, Livy, Velleius Paterculus, Tacitus, Appian, Cornelius Nepos, Plutarch, Suetonius, Plautus, Cicero, Virgil, Horace, Petronius, Quintilian, Epictetus, Juvenal, Fronto, Apuleius, as well as non-literary evidence. Chapter 4 engages the Jewish witnesses, including 1 Maccabees, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish pseudepigrapha, Philo, Josephus, Talmudic sources, and non-literary sources. Chapter 5 examines the relevant accounts of Luke-Acts, focusing on Luke 7:1-10 and Acts 10:1-11:18. The Conclusion reviews the findings of the study and summarizes the results.Beihefte zur Zeitschrift für die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft und die Kunde der älteren Kirche ;Beiheft 203.Gentiles in the New TestamentRELIGION / Biblical Criticism & Interpretation / New TestamentbisacshRomeArmyOfficersRomeHistoryEmpire, 30 B.C.-284 A.DActs.Gospel of Luke.centurion.Gentiles in the New Testament.RELIGION / Biblical Criticism & Interpretation / New Testament.226.4/067BC 7260BSZrvkKyrychenko Alexander1969-1498422MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910787604903321The Roman army and the expansion of the gospel3723976UNINA01560nam0 22003371i 450 UON0030617020231205104033.9520080109d1902 |0itac50 bafreFR|||| 1||||Voyages dans le haut Laos et sur les frontières de Chine et de Birmaniepar Pierre Lefèvre-PontalisParisErnest Lerux Editeur1902327 p.ill.28 cmSEA VIII B 6,3UON00263705Già inv. Spink and Naomichi Yaguchi --Summary of Evidence Bearing upon the Disputed Dating of Harisena’s Reign /Walter M. Spink and Naomichi Yaguchi.Volume 6, in Walter Spink's detailed analysis of the creation and development of the Ajanta caves, during the reign of the emperor Harisena (c.460-c.477) has had a profound and often upsetting impact on the understanding of Indian history in the so-called Golden Age. The author contends that through the discipline of Art History one can in fact change the established view of cultural developments in the crucial \'Classic Age\' (5th Century CE). One of his major aims is to prove that it was the Vakatakas, under the emperor Harisena, and not the Guptas, that brought Indian culture to its apogee in the late 470s and to show that by analyzing and organizing Ajanta's \'defining feature\' in revealing developmental sequences, one can support, with specifics, the revolutionary (but now increasingly accepted) \'short chronology\' for which the author is well known. These \'defining features\' range from the changing types of Buddha images and living arrangements for the monks, to the precise analysis of the evolution of pillars, doorways, and excavation techniques. The volume also includes, at the start, a discussion of the transforming effect of competition, and finally war, as a key to Ajanta's highly driven development, its florescence, and finally its sad demise.Handbook of oriental studies.
