Wegen seiner Vielgestaltigkeit in Prosa und Dichtung steht hinter ihm kein kanonischer Gattungsbegriff, sondern eine literarische Technik, die in zahlreichen Textformen wie Epigrammen, Epen oder Reden Anwendung fand. Mit dem Werk des Dichters Publilius Optatianus Porfyrius, vermutlich entstanden zwischen 317 und 326 n. Chr., vollzieht sich eine mediale Neuausrichtung spätantiker Panegyrik. Seine Figuren-, Gitter- und Versspielgedichte transformieren das klassische Setting einer Lobrede in ein komplexes Wechselspiel zwischen laudator und laudandus. Performativ lässt der Dichter Kaiser Konstantin den Großen als individuellen und intimen Leser seiner carmina auftreten. In Abgrenzung zu zeitgenössischen Prosapanegyriken schreibt Optatian dem Kaiser die Rolle eines literarischen Co-Akteurs zu, der durch seine Lektüre aktiv an der Text- und Sinnkonstruktion seines panegyricus beteiligt ist. Seine Gedichte überführen das klassische Kommunikationsgefälle zwischen laudator und laudandus in ein Modell, bei dem beide Instanzen am Zustandekommen der panegyrischen Botschaft arbeiten.To honor the 20th year of his reign, Emperor Constantine was given what may be the most precious gift of his lifetime: a codex of artistic panegyrics and odes dedicated to him by the poet Optatianus.
