Diese Studie versucht in einer chronologischen Abfolge mit bestimmten Schwerpunktsetzungen von den ersten Anfängen in der Ringstraßen-Ära bis zum „Anschluss“ von 1938 einen Überblick zu geben. Neben bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten und spezifischen Gruppierungen - u. a. die Karl König-Schule oder der Kreis um Josef Frank - werden auch Bauaufgaben, wie Synagogen und Banken, aber auch die Wiener Werkbundsiedlung oder die Sozialbauten des „Roten Wien“ untersucht. Ein eigenes Kapitel widmet sich der „Wiener Wohnraumkultur“ an der insbesondere Frauen einen erheblichen Anteil hatten.
