The natural foods movement grew out of this contrarian spirit. Through a politics of principled shopping, eating, and entrepreneurship, food revolutionaries dissented from corporate capitalism and mainstream America. In Food for Dissent, Maria McGrath traces the growth of the natural foods movement from its countercultural fringe beginning to its twenty-first-century "food revolution" ascendance, focusing on popular natural foods touchstones--vegetarian cookbooks, food co-ops, and health advocates. Guided by an ideology of ethical consumption, these institutions and actors spread the movement's oppositionality and transformed America's foodscape, at least for some. Yet this strategy proved an uncertain instrument for the advancement of social justice, environmental defense, and anti-corporatism. The case studies explored in Food for Dissent indicate the limits of using conscientious eating, shopping, and selling as tools for civic activism.VerbraucherverhaltengndProtestgndNahrunggndLebensmittelverbrauchgndGegenkulturgndEthikgndErnährungsgewohnheitgndNatural foods industryfast(OCoLC)fst01034043Natural foodsfast(OCoLC)fst01034032Food habitsfast(OCoLC)fst00930807Consumer movementsfast(OCoLC)fst01893339Natural foods industryUnited StatesHistory20th centuryConsumer movementsUnited StatesHistory20th centuryNatural foodsUnited StatesHistory20th centuryFood habitsUnited StatesHistory20th centuryUnited StatesfastHistory.Electronic books.natural foods movementfood for dissent bookethical consumption historycountercultural food activismpolitics of eatingnatural foodsfood revolution historyconscientious consumerismfood politicsvegetarian cookbook historyhealth food revolutionwhole foods movementnatural eating 1970sorganic food historyclean eating originsfood justice activismradical food politicsconsumer activism in food60s and 70s social movementsalternative food systemscivic activism through foodhistory of ethical eatinganti-corporate food choiceshippie food culturecultural politics of foodfood and environmentalismsustainable food movement originsfood reform in Americaethical eating and political changefood studies and activismAmerican food historypolitical consumerism in the USsociology of food systemsAmerican studies food culturebooks on food activismhistory of natural foodsfood revolution timelinehow food became politicalnatural foods in Americabooks on ethical shoppingvegetarianism and politicsco-ops and the counterculturerise of health food in the UScan food choices be political?history of food co-ops in Americadid the food revolution succeed?how the counterculture changed foodAmerican food activism historyroots of ethical eatingfood as civic resistancethe politics of healthy foodethical food consumption limitslegacy of natural food activismVerbraucherverhalten.Protest.Nahrung.Lebensmittelverbrauch.Gegenkultur.Ethik.Ernährungsgewohnheit.Natural foods industry.Natural foods.Food habits.Consumer movements.Natural foods industryHistoryConsumer movementsHistoryNatural foodsHistoryFood habitsHistory394.1209730904McGrath Maria1965-MdBmJHUPMdBmJHUPBOOK9911145193703321UNINA
