The deficiencies of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) are in urgent need of attention: the BTWC is the central international agreement to prevent the proliferation of biological warfare programmes. Uniquely, this book is written by diplomats involved in the decade-long effort (1991-2001) in which State Parties to the BTWC tried to agree a Protocol to the Convention with legally binding measures to strengthen its effectiveness, and academics concerned with the negotiations. Just before negotiations foundered, when the Chairman's proposed text was virtually complete, the problems and proposed solutions were examined thoroughly, leading to this book. The book is wide-ranging in its review of the history of biological warfare, the reasons why the current biological revolution is of such concern, and the main features of the BTWC itself. The core of the book examines the key elements of the proposed protocol - declarations, visits, challenge-type investigations, and enhanced international cooperation - and the implications for government, industry and biodefence, giving us all a better understanding of what still remains to be done to avert a biowarfare catastrophe.NATO Science Series II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry,1568-2609 ;150Biological arms controlVerificationChemical arms controlTreaties, InternationalHILCCInternational LawHILCCLaw, Politics & GovernmentHILCCBiological arms controlVerification.Chemical arms control.Treaties, InternationalInternational LawLaw, Politics & Government341.7/35Chevrier Marie IsabelleSpringerLink (Online service)PQKBBOOK9911104379803321The implementation of legally binding measures to strengthen the biological and toxin weapons convention4704227UNINA03298nam 2200709 a 450 991110449620332120251117101134.09786612359309978128235930712823593049780520934061052093406710.1525/9780520934061(CKB)2670000000390785(EBL)470956(OCoLC)609850104(SSID)ssj0000297527(PQKBManifestationID)11220175(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000297527(PQKBWorkID)10335299(PQKB)11314965(MiAaPQ)EBC470956(DE-B1597)520310(OCoLC)808600760(DE-B1597)9780520934061(Au-PeEL)EBL470956(CaPaEBR)ebr10676250(CaONFJC)MIL235930(Perlego)4141532(EXLCZ)99267000000039078520070910d2008 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrGhosts of futures past spiritualism and the cultural politics of nineteenth-century America /Molly McGarry1st ed.Berkeley University of California Press20081 online resource (285 p.)"Simpson, imprint in humanities"--P. facing t.p.9780520252608 0520252608 9780520274532 0520274539 Includes bibliographical references and index.Mourning, media, and the cultural politics of conjuring the dead -- Indian guides : haunted subjects and the politics of vanishing -- Spectral sexualities : free love, moral panic, and the making of U.S. obscenity law -- Mediomania : the spirit of science in a culture of belief and doubt -- Secular subjects : a queer genealogy of untimely sexualities.Ghosts of Futures Past guides readers through the uncanny world of nineteenth-century American spiritualism. More than an occult parlor game, this was a new religion, which channeled the voices of the dead, linked present with past, and conjured new worldly and otherworldly futures. Tracing the persistence of magic in an emergent culture of secularism, Molly McGarry brings a once marginalized practice to the center of American cultural history. Spiritualism provided an alchemical combination of science and magic that called into question the very categories of male and female, material and immaterial, self and other, living and dead. Dissolving the boundaries between them opened Spiritualist practitioners to other voices and, in turn, allowed them to imagine new social worlds and forge diverse political affinities.SpiritualismUnited StatesHistory19th centuryReligion and cultureUnited StatesHistory19th centuryUnited StatesReligion19th centurySpiritualismHistoryReligion and cultureHistory133.90973/09034McGarry Molly955723MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9911104496203321Ghosts of futures past4757367UNINA
