Environment and Post-Soviet Transformation in Kazakhstan's Aral Sea Region is the first book to explore what these monumental changes have meant to those living on the sea's shores. Following the fluctuating fortunes of the pre-Soviet, Soviet and post-Soviet fisheries, the book shows how the vast environmental changes the region has undergone cannot be disentangled from the transformations of Soviet socialism and postsocialism. This ethnographic perspective prompts a critical rethinking of the category of environmental disaster through which the region is predominantly known. Tracing how the sea's retreat and partial return have been apprehended by diverse local actors in the former port of Aral'sk and surrounding fishing villages, as well as by scientists, bureaucrats and international development workers, William Wheeler draws out the multiple meanings environmental change acquires within different contexts. This study of how people make their lives amidst overlapping ecological and political-economic upheavals is rich in ethnographic detail that is both rooted in Soviet legacies and alive to the new transnational connections that are reshaping the region. Offering a rigorous political ecology of Soviet socialism and after, the book is a major contribution to the nascent environmental anthropology of Central Asia. It will be of interest to environmental anthropologists, environmental historians, and scholars of all disciplines working on Central Asia and the former USSR.Environment and Post-Soviet Transformation in Kazakhstan’s Aral Sea Region Environment and Post-Soviet Transformation in Kazakhstan’s Aral Sea Region Human ecologyHuman ecology.304.2Wheeler William117005NjHacINjHaclBOOK9910512205003321Environment and post-Soviet transformation in Kazakhstans Aral Sea region2839410UNINA04118nam 2200673Ia 450 991097269810332120200520144314.09780674039445067403944010.4159/9780674039445(CKB)1000000000786785(StDuBDS)AH23050762(SSID)ssj0000196093(PQKBManifestationID)11180773(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000196093(PQKBWorkID)10142252(PQKB)10666673(Au-PeEL)EBL3300405(CaPaEBR)ebr10318397(OCoLC)923111144(DE-B1597)588899(DE-B1597)9780674039445(MiAaPQ)EBC3300405(OCoLC)1322124368(Perlego)1146946(EXLCZ)99100000000078678520011002d2002 uy 0engur|||||||||||txtccrMaking sense of life explaining biological development with models, metaphors, and machines /Evelyn Fox Keller1st ed.Cambridge, MA Harvard University Press20021 online resource (xii, 388 p. )illOriginally published: 2002.9780674007468 0674007468 9780674012509 067401250X Includes bibliographical references (p. How will we know when we have 'made sense' of life? Explanations in the biological sciences are provisional and partial, judged by criteria as heterogenous as their subject matter. This text accounts for this diversity. What do biologists want? If, unlike their counterparts in physics, biologists are generally wary of a grand, overarching theory, at what kinds of explanation do biologists aim? How will we know when we have "made sense" of life? Such questions, Evelyn Fox Keller suggests, offer no simple answers. Explanations in the biological sciences are typically provisional and partial, judged by criteria as heterogeneous as their subject matter. It is Keller's aim in this bold and challenging book to account for this epistemological diversity--particularly in the discipline of developmental biology. In particular, Keller asks, what counts as an "explanation" of biological development in individual organisms? Her inquiry ranges from physical and mathematical models to more familiar explanatory metaphors to the dramatic contributions of recent technological developments, especially in imaging, recombinant DNA, and computer modeling and simulations. A history of the diverse and changing nature of biological explanation in a particularly charged field, Making Sense of Life draws our attention to the temporal, disciplinary, and cultural components of what biologists mean, and what they understand, when they propose to explain life.Developmental biologyBiologyDevelopmental biology.Biology.570.1WB 4000rvkKeller Evelyn Fox1936-51484MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910972698103321Making sense of life4356176UNINA04113nam 22005895 450 991101586630332120250723020228.03-031-93780-510.1007/978-3-031-93780-4(MiAaPQ)EBC32189536(Au-PeEL)EBL32189536(CKB)39567931100041(DE-He213)978-3-031-93780-4(EXLCZ)993956793110004120250702d2025 u| 0engurcnu||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierRegulation of Mushroom- and Mycelium-Based Products in the EU /by Alexandra Molitorisová, Alessandro Monaco, Gerald Lackner, Seth Roberts, Kai P. Purnhagen1st ed. 2025.Cham :Springer Nature Switzerland :Imprint: Springer,2025.1 online resource (156 pages)SpringerBriefs in Law and Regulation & Innovation,3004-92293-031-93779-1 Introduction, Background and Methodology of the Project -- Classification of Mycelium and Mushroom Products -- Novel Food Status of Mycelium and Mushroom Product -- Labelling of Mushrooms and Mycelium Products -- Conclusions. This book presents a novel exploration of the European Union's (EU) regulatory framework applicable to food products derived from mushrooms and mycelium fermentation, a subject that has not previously been the focus of a comprehensive study or review. It addresses a critical gap in the field by offering a detailed mapping of the applicable laws and regulations, providing much-needed clarity for food business operators, investors, and stakeholders eager to participate in this burgeoning sector. The text delves into how the EU's regulatory environment can either stimulate innovation or pose challenges in the dynamic field of food innovation concerning mycelium-based products. By dissecting these regulatory aspects, the book serves as a valuable tool for companies, startups, investors, and policymakers. It is designed to guide these stakeholders through the complexities of the applicable regulatory framework, helping them to understand and navigate the regulations effectively. Further, this book plays a crucial role in highlighting the ambiguities in the interpretation of EU food regulations concerning novel foods based on mushroom or mycelium. These insights are not only crucial for current market players but also serve as a foundational resource for academic researchers and policymakers. By identifying these gaps, the book opens up avenues for future research and policy development, aiming to position the EU as a leading force in the global food transformation. Intended for a diverse audience, including legal professionals, biotechnologists, food industry experts, and policymakers, this book is an essential guide for anyone involved in or interested in the development and regulation of innovative mushroom and mycelium food products in the EU. Its comprehensive analysis, practical guidance, and forward-looking perspective make it a valuable addition to the field, contributing to the discourse on food innovation and regulation.SpringerBriefs in Law and Regulation & Innovation,3004-9229Commercial lawEuropean Economic CommunityFoodSafety measuresEuropean Economic LawFood SafetyCommercial law.European Economic Community.FoodSafety measures.European Economic Law.Food Safety.343.407Molitorisová Alexandra1833411Monaco Alessandro343100Lackner Gerald1833412Roberts Seth1833413Purnhagen Kai P1064175MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9911015866303321Regulation of Mushroom- and Mycelium-Based Products in the EU4408332UNINA00840nam0-2200277 --450 991104132970332120251119102003.020251119d1988----kmuy0itay5050 bagerCHa 001yySchweizer Geschichteein historischer Abriss von den Anfängen bis zurGegenwartDieter Fahrni4.
