Angelo Guerragio and Giovanni Paolini analyze Volterra’s most important contributions to mathematics and their applications, as well as his outstanding organizational achievements in scientific policy. Volterra was one of the founding fathers of functional analysis and the author of fundamental contributions in the field of integral equations, elasticity theory and population dynamics (Lotka-Volterra model). He delivered keynote lectures on the occasion of the International Congresses of Mathematicians held in Paris (1900), Rome (1908), Strasbourg (1920) and Bologna (1928). He became involved in the scientific development in united Italy and was appointed senator of the kingdom in 1905. One of his numerous non-mathematical activities was founding the National Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR). During the First World War he was active in military research. After the war he took a clear stand against fascism, which was the starting point for his exclusion. In 1926 he resigned as president of the world famous Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and was later on excluded from the academy. In 1931 he was one of the few university lecturers who denied to swear an oath of allegiance to the fascistic regime. In 1938 he suffered from the impact of the racial laws. The authors draw a comprehensive picture of Vito Volterra, both as a great mathematician and an organizer of science.MathematiciansItalyBiographyMathematicians510.92574/.0724Guerraggio Angelo1948-39397Paoloni Giovanni66148Williams Kim779670MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910438143403321Vito Volterra4193525UNINA04073nam 22007333 450 991100922880332120240912152242.09780252045721(cloth)0252045726(cloth)9780252087820(paperback)0252087828(paperback)9780252056581(ebook)0252056582(ebook)(OCoLC)1396560853(CKB)31449520700041(MiAaPQ)EBC31068138(Au-PeEL)EBL31068138(OCoLC)1430663090(Perlego)4390253(EXLCZ)993144952070004120240416h20242024 uy 0engurbn#|||maaaatxtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierTactical inclusion difference and vulnerability in U.S. military advertising /Jeremiah Favara1st ed.Urbana :University of Illinois Press,2024.©20241 online resource (275 pages) illustrationsFeminist Media StudiesPrint version: Favara, Jeremiah, 1982- Tactical inclusion Urbana : University of Illinois Press, 2024 9780252045721 (DLC) 2023034972 Includes bibliographical references (pages 207-247) and index. We'll hire you -- America at its best -- The military type -- Make the world a better place -- Walls always fall -- Conclusion : beyond tactical inclusion."The revolution in military recruitment advertising to people of color and women played an essential role in making the US military one of the most diverse institutions in the United States. Starting at the dawn of the all-volunteer era, Jeremiah Favara illuminates the challenges at the heart of military inclusion by analyzing recruitment ads published in three commercial magazines: Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, and Ebony. Favara draws on Black feminism, critical race theory, and queer of color critique to reveal how the military and advertisers affected change by deploying a set of strategies and practices called tactical inclusion. As Favara shows, tactical inclusion used representations of servicemembers in the new military to connect with people susceptible to recruiting efforts and rendered these new audiences vulnerable to, valuable to, and subject to state violence. Compelling and eye-opening, Tactical Inclusion combines original analysis with personal experience to chart advertising's role in building the all-volunteer military."--Provided by publisher.Feminist media studies (University of Illinois (System).
