Supported by a "provisional army" of 21 men, Brown hoped to rouse the slaves in Virginia to rebellion. But he was quickly captured and, after a short but stormy trial, hanged on December 2, 1859. Brian McGinty provides the first comprehensive account of the trial, which raised important questions about jurisdiction, judicial fairness, and the nature of treason under the American constitutional system.Trials (Treason)VirginiaAbolitionistsUnited StatesBiographyHarpers Ferry (W. It covers many crucial issues -- race, orientalism, otherness, evolution -- and explores the influence of important anthropological theories on the perception of non-Western music. The book also considers a wide range of other writings of the period, from psychology and travel literature to musicology and theories of musical transcription, and it reflects on the historically problematic term "ethnomusicology." Representing Non-Western Music discusses such theories as noble simplicity, monogenism and polygenism, the comparative method, degenerationism, and developmentalism. Zon looks at the effect of evolutionism on the musical press, general music histories, and histories of national music. He also treats the work of Charles Samuel Myers, the first Britain to record non-Western music in the field, and explores how A. H. Fox Strangways used contemporary translation theory as an analogy for transcription in The Music of Hindostan (1914) to show that individuality can be retained by embracing foreign elements rather than adapting them to Western musical style. Bennett Zon is Reader in Music and Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study, Durham University UK and author of Music and Metaphor in Nineteenth-Century British Musicology (Ashgate, 2000).Eastman studies in music ;v. 48.EthnomusicologyGreat BritainHistoryMusic and anthropologyEthnomusicologyHistory.Music and anthropology.781.6/9094109034Zon Bennett1827286MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9911008434303321Representing non-Western music in nineteenth-century Britain4395395UNINA01653nam 22003853 450 991015626130332120250605080351.01-943772-59-2(CKB)3710000000986052(BIP)055907541(MiAaPQ)EBC32138832(Au-PeEL)EBL32138832(OCoLC)968007417(EXLCZ)99371000000098605220250605d2016 uy 0engurcnu||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierOne for the Money1st ed.NEW YORK :Nancy Yost Literary Agency,2016.©2016.1 online resource (65 p.) *Previously published in Death's Excellent Vacation anthology and Magic Graves collection. An exciting novelette set in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress world.A romantic getaway for vampires Cat Crawfield and her husband Bones is cut short when they're called on to guard a spoiled heiress with a price on her head, and an undead hitman on her trail. What starts as a simple bodyguard job ends up being a fight for survival that neither Cat, nor Bones saw coming.''Frost delivers sexy, nonstop thrills.'' -Melissa Marr, New York Times bestselling author''Frost's dazzling blend of urban fantasy action and passionate relationships makes her a true phenomenon.'' -Romantic TimesFictionFrost Jeaniene1774677MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910156261303321One for the Money4384771UNINA
