Son, en parte, los responsables de la vida "Moderna", pues nos permiten producir combustibles, medicamentos, materiales para un sinfín de aplicaciones, entre otros. Actualmente, se pueden citar cuatro tipos de catálisis: 1 heterogénea, 2 homogénea, 3 enzimática y 4 híbrida. En la homogénea, tanto el catalizador como los reactivos se encuentran en la misma fase. En la catálisis enzimática, una enzima cataliza una reacción bioquímica. Por su parte, la catálisis híbrida combina una sustancia química con una enzima para generar un sistema multicatalítico. Finalmente, en la catálisis heterogénea, el catalizador normalmente es sólido y los reactivos y productos están en fase líquida o gaseosa. Esto ofrece la ventaja de una fácil separación del catalizador de los productos, por lo que industrialmente es la más aplicada, debido a que, a gran escala, es menos costosa que su similar homogénea.
