It documents substantial increases in foreign bank presence, with many more home and host countries. Current market shares of foreign banks average 20 percent in OECD countries and 50 percent elsewhere. Foreign banks have higher capital and more liquidity, but lower profitability than domestic banks do. Only in developing countries is foreign bank presence negatively related with domestic credit creation. During the global crisis foreign banks reduced credit more compared to domestic banks, except when they dominated the host banking systems.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2012/010Banks and banking, ForeignInvestments, ForeignBank creditimfBankingimfBanks and BankingimfBanks and bankingimfBanks and banking, ForeignimfBanksimfCommercial banksimfCreditimfDepository InstitutionsimfEmerging and frontier financial marketsimfFinanceimfFinance: GeneralimfFinancial institutionsimfFinancial Markets and the MacroeconomyimfFinancial marketsimfFinancial sector developmentimfFinancial services industryimfForeign banksimfGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)imfInternational BusinessimfInternational InvestmentimfLong-term Capital MovementsimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMonetary economicsimfMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: GeneralimfMoney and Monetary PolicyimfMoneyimfMortgagesimfMultinational FirmsimfUnited StatesimfBanks and banking, Foreign.Investments, Foreign.Bank creditBankingBanks and BankingBanks and bankingBanks and banking, ForeignBanksCommercial banksCreditDepository InstitutionsEmerging and frontier financial marketsFinanceFinance: GeneralFinancial institutionsFinancial Markets and the MacroeconomyFinancial marketsFinancial sector developmentFinancial services industryForeign banksGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)International BusinessInternational InvestmentLong-term Capital MovementsMicro Finance InstitutionsMonetary economicsMonetary Policy, Central Banking, and the Supply of Money and Credit: GeneralMoney and Monetary PolicyMoneyMortgagesMultinational Firms332.1/52Horen Neeltje1816491Claessens Stijn282431International Monetary Fund.DcWaIMFBOOK9910973681803321Foreign Banks4372834UNINA
