They are also articulate mammals. How are these two aspects linked? This is a question that is only beginning to be explored. The present collection makes a contribution to the investigations into the use of language in those situations which, informally and intuitively, we call 'political'. Such an approach is revealing not only for politics itself but also for the human language capacity. Each chapter outlines a particular method or analytic approach and illustrates its application to a contemporary political issue, institution or mode of political behaviour. As a whole, the collection aims to give a sample of current research in the field. It will interest those who are beginning to carry the research paradigm forward, as well as provide an introduction for newcomers, whether they come from neighbouring or remote disciplines or from none.Discourse approaches to politics, society, and culture ;v. 4.Discourse analysisPolitical aspectsPolitical scienceDiscourse analysisPolitical aspects.Political science.401/.41Chilton Paul A(Paul Anthony)254099Schaffner Christina287933MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910972650403321Politics as text and talk4347507UNINA03721oam 22005774a 450 991095683990332120240508050045.097808203532960820353299(CKB)4100000004839653(OCoLC)1040032402(MdBmJHUP)muse66354(MiAaPQ)EBC5426783(Perlego)839509(EXLCZ)99410000000483965320180330d2018 uy 0engur|||||||nn|ntxtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierRegional Pathways to Nuclear NonproliferationWilfred Wan1st ed.Athens, Georgia :The University of Georgia Press,[2018]Baltimore, Md. :Project MUSE, 2018©[2018]1 online resourceStudies in security and international affairs9780820364926 0820364924 9780820353302 0820353302 Includes bibliographical references and index.Nuclear frustrations -- Global nuclear order at a crossroads -- Foundations for regional nuclear order -- Established orders: Western Europe and Latin America -- Northeast Asia -- Southeast Asia -- The Middle East -- Elusive orders : Africa and South Asia -- The future of nonproliferation."This book makes a case for a reorientation of the nuclear nonproliferation regime, posing an alternative conceptualization of nuclear order centered on the regional level. It draws on an array of theoretical tools from the literatures on regionalism, security governance, and international institutions, developing a framework that analyzes the conditions that would allow for more robust regional nuclear cooperation. These include the presence of (1) institutional architecture, (2) political, economic, and military relations among states, and (3) fundamental regional awareness and identity. Wan then deploys this theoretical approach to several case studies, including Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, focusing on two interrelated questions. First, what is the viability of a stronger regional nuclear order in the region? Second, what form would such an order most likely take? In the process, the book identifies the magnitude and character of the proliferation challenge specific to each region. It also considers the existing character of nuclear cooperation at the regional level. Wan presents the historical development of regional nuclear order in Latin America as a model for the rest of the world. In this area, regional institutions--ranging from organizations to dialogues to ad hoc arrangements--gradually became more involved across economic, environmental, and human security domains, providing the foundation for multilateral cooperation in the nuclear arena. As his analysis shows, in light of the contemporary proliferation landscape, the establishment and strengthening of such regional nuclear orders is essential"--Provided by publisher.Studies in security and international affairs.Regionalism (International organization)Nuclear arms controlNuclear nonproliferationElectronic books.
