CONCLUSION""; ""Appendix""; ""References""This paper reviews alternative approaches to measuring an economy's cost competitiveness and proposes some new measures inspired by the economic theory of index numbers. The indices provide a theoretical benchmark for estimated real effective exchange rates, but differ from standard measures in that they are based on marginal rather than average sectoral shares in GDP or employment. The use of the new indices is illustrated by some simple calculations that highlight the potential exposure of the Irish economy to fluctuations in the euro-sterling exchange rate.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/209CompetitionEconometric modelsIndex numbers (Economics)Aggregate Human CapitalimfAggregate Labor ProductivityimfCompetitionimfConsumer price indexesimfCost and standard of livingimfCost of livingimfCurrencyimfData AccessimfDeflationimfEconomic theoryimfEmploymentimfFinanceimfFinance: GeneralimfForeign ExchangeimfForeign exchangeimfGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)imfIncome economicsimfInflationimfIntergenerational Income DistributionimfLaborimfLabourimfMacroeconomicsimfMethodology for Collecting, Estimating, and Organizing Macroeconomic DataimfPrice indexesimfPrice LevelimfReal effective exchange ratesimfUnemploymentimfWagesimfIrelandEconomic conditionsIrelandimfCompetitionEconometric models.Index numbers (Economics)Aggregate Human CapitalAggregate Labor ProductivityCompetitionConsumer price indexesCost and standard of livingCost of livingCurrencyData AccessDeflationEconomic theoryEmploymentFinanceFinance: GeneralForeign ExchangeForeign exchangeGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)Income economicsInflationIntergenerational Income DistributionLaborLabourMacroeconomicsMethodology for Collecting, Estimating, and Organizing Macroeconomic DataPrice indexesPrice LevelReal effective exchange ratesUnemploymentWagesNeary J.
