Sector-Level Gravity Coefficients; ReferencesThis paper examines the mechanisms through which output volatility is related to trade openness using an industry-level panel dataset of manufacturing production and trade. The main results are threefold. First, sectors more open to international trade are more volatile. Second, trade is accompanied by increased specialization. Third, sectors that are more open are less correlated with the rest of the economy. The point estimates indicate that each of the three effects has an appreciable impact on aggregate volatility. Added together they imply that the relationship between trade openness and overall volatility is positive and economically significant.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2008/146International tradeEconometric modelsFinancial crisesEconometric modelsIndustrial productivityEconometric modelsBalance of tradeimfEconometric Modeling: GeneralimfEconometric modelsimfEconometrics & economic statisticsimfEconometricsimfEconomic theoryimfEmpirical Studies of TradeimfExpenditures, PublicimfExports and ImportsimfGravity modelsimfIndustries: ManufacturingimfIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: GeneralimfInternational economicsimfMacroeconomicsimfMacroeconomics: ProductionimfManufacturing industriesimfManufacturingimfNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: GeneralimfProduction growthimfProductionimfPublic expenditure reviewimfPublic finance & taxationimfPublic FinanceimfTrade balanceimfUnited StatesimfInternational tradeEconometric models.Financial crisesEconometric models.Industrial productivityEconometric models.Balance of tradeEconometric Modeling: GeneralEconometric modelsEconometrics & economic statisticsEconometricsEconomic theoryEmpirical Studies of TradeExpenditures, PublicExports and ImportsGravity modelsIndustries: ManufacturingIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: GeneralInternational economicsMacroeconomicsMacroeconomics: ProductionManufacturing industriesManufacturingNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: GeneralProduction growthProductionPublic expenditure reviewPublic finance & taxationPublic FinanceTrade balance332.1Levchenko Andrei1143204Di Giovanni Julian1815888International Monetary Fund.Research Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910970188703321Trade Openness and Volatility4372497UNINA
