Schmidt -- Index /J. Schmidt.During the six hundred years of its existence, innumerable of manuscripts with, mostly, Turkish texts were produced in the Ottoman Empire. These are mainly preserved in libraries in the countries that once were part of that extended empire; a lesser number of such manuscripts had their origin in central Asia, Persia and India. From the sixteenth century in particular, interest for these handwritten books increased in Europe and found their way to the libraries of scholars, book collectors and universities. The John Rylands University Library is one such repository of Turkish manuscripts of both Ottoman and wider Asian provenance. Most of these manuscripts, among which a number of unique, rare and luxuriously produced items, were originally gathered by a rich mine owner, the 25th Earl of Crawford. In this book, the collection is for the first time described in a detailed and systematic way.Islamic Manuscripts and Books2.Manuscripts, TurkishEnglandManchesterCatalogsManuscripts, Turkish015.56Schmidt Jan638176MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910781456203321A catalogue of the Turkish manuscripts in the John Rylands University Library at Manchester3716606UNINA03156oam 2200613I 450 991096949770332120251117085454.01-315-25592-810.4324/9781315255927 (CKB)3710000000965437(MiAaPQ)EBC4758898(Au-PeEL)EBL4758898(CaPaEBR)ebr11311083(CaONFJC)MIL975206(OCoLC)965739149(OCoLC)965543255(FINmELB)ELB140210(BIP)59812242(BIP)12687305(EXLCZ)99371000000096543720180706e20162005 uy 0engurcnu||||||||rdacontentrdamediardacarrierEuropean Muslims and the secular state /edited by Jocelyne Cesari, Seán McLoughlinLondon ;New York :Routledge,2016.1 online resource (215 pages)"The Network of Comparative Research on Islam and Muslims in Europe."First published 2005 by Ashgate.0-7546-4475-8 1-351-93851-7 Includes bibliographical references and index.section 1. Secularity in Europe and the institutionalization of Islam : legal regulation and political recognition -- section 2. The state, civil society and Muslim leaderships : contested representations of Islam in Europe -- section 3. Practising Islam in secular contexts : authority, religiosity and identity. The institutionalization of Islam in the West continues to raise many questions for a range of different constituencies. Secularization represents much more than the legal separation of politics and religion in Europe; for important segments of European societies, it has become the cultural norm. Therefore, Muslims' settlement and their claims for the public recognition of Islam have often been perceived as a threat. This volume explores current interactions between Muslims and the more or less secularized public spaces of several European states, assessing the challenges such interactions imply for both Muslims and the societies in which they now live. Divided into three parts, it examines the impact of State-Church relations, 'Islamophobia' and 'the war on terrorism', evaluates the engagement of Muslim leaders with the State and civil society, and reflects on both individual and collective transformations of Muslim religiosity.MuslimsEuropeIslam and politicsEuropeIslam and social problemsEuropeIslam and stateEuropeMuslimsIslam and politicsIslam and social problemsIslam and state305.697094Cesari Jocelyne659908McLoughlin Seán1969-1867119Network of Comparative Research on Islam and Muslims in Europe.FlBoTFGFlBoTFGBOOK9910969497703321European Muslims and the secular state4474545UNINA
