In Fleischacker's view, Kant and Adam Smith think of liberty as a matter of acting on our capacity for judgment, thereby differing both from those who tie it to the satisfaction of our desires and those who translate it as action in accordance with reason or "will." Integrating the thought of Kant and Smith, and developing his own stand through readings of the Critique of Judgment and The Wealth of Nations, Fleischacker shows how different acting on one's best judgment is from acting on one's desires--how, in particular, good judgment, as opposed to mere desire, can flourish only in favorable social and political conditions. At the same time, exercising judgment is something every individual must do for him- or herself, hence not something that philosophers and politicians who reason better than the rest of us can do in our stead. For this reason advocates of a liberty based on judgment are likely to be more concerned than are libertarians to make sure that government provides people with conditions for the use of their liberty--for example, excellent standards of education, health care, and unemployment insurance--while at the same time promoting a less paternalistic view of government than most of the movements associated for the past thirty years with the political left.LibertyJudgment (Ethics)Liberty.Judgment (Ethics)323.44Fleischacker Samuel676320MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910957661303321A third concept of liberty4324763UNINA05670nam 2201309 a 450 991096586290332120251027112044.01-61149-702-71-4616-6270-210.5040/9781611497021(CKB)2670000000370110(EBL)1210866(OCoLC)851315743(SSID)ssj0000886750(PQKBManifestationID)12317904(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000886750(PQKBWorkID)10838998(PQKB)11610331(Au-PeEL)EBL1210866(CaPaEBR)ebr10704454(CaONFJC)MIL491782(MiAaPQ)EBC1210866(OCoLC)1249709139(OCoLC)843332630(OCoLC)843881873(OCoLC)851315743(OCoLC)860421078(OCoLC)962188801(OCoLC)972014858(OCoLC)991939031(OCoLC)1037714427(OCoLC)1038663071(OCoLC)1055386993(OCoLC)1058176693(OCoLC)1066531846(OCoLC)1081248440(OCoLC)1153554715(OCoLC)1162417354(OCoLC)1228578220(OCoLC)1241847620(OCoLC)1243573723(OCoLC)1290077050(OCoLC)1300604785(OCoLC)1354541318(UkLoBP)BP9781611497021BC(EXLCZ)99267000000037011020120316d2011 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrSustainability & historic preservation toward a holistic view /edited by Richard Longstreth1st ed.Newark [Del.] University of Delaware Press ;Lanham, Md. To date, discussions of the relationship between historic preservation and sustainability have generally focused on the energy consumption of buildings. The nine chapters in this book show how that agenda can and should be expanded by examining many other facets of the environment, including agricultural lands, urban waterworks, irrigation systems, natural settings, an arboretum, and post?World War II suburbs.Sustainability and historic preservationHistoric preservationEnvironmental aspectsUnited StatesCongressesLandscape protectionUnited StatesCongressesBUSINESS & ECONOMICSInfrastructurebisacshLandscape protectionfast(OCoLC)fst00992049SOCIAL SCIENCEGeneralbisacshUnited Statesfasthttps://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrqConference papers and proceedings.fastHistoric preservationEnvironmental aspectsLandscape protectionBUSINESS & ECONOMICSInfrastructure.Landscape protection.SOCIAL SCIENCEGeneral.363.690973Longstreth Richard W32974Bloomsbury (Firm),National Forum on Historic Preservation Practice(6th :2009 :Goucher College)DLCDLCOCLCON$TIDEBKYDXCPE7BTEFODNLEEBLCPDEBSZLOAAGLDBLVTCOCUFICAK6UPIFAGFVLZCUMERUCU3WD6HOCLCFSTFVNSWRMVTSICGINTVT2AU@CEFWYUDKCM8DUKAHLUKCREVLYAJSOCLCQTUHNVOCLCOOCLCQOCLCOOCLCLOCLCQOCLCLOCLCAUtOrBLWBOOK9910965862903321Sustainability & historic preservation4480326UNINA
