European Structured Early Intervention and Resolution; ReferencesThe global financial crisis has highlighted the importance of early identification of weak banks: when problems are identified late, solutions are much more costly. Until recently, Europe has seen only a small number of outright bank failures, which made the estimation of early warning models for bank supervision very difficult. This paper presents a unique database of individual bank distress across the European Union from mid-1990s to 2008. Using this data set, we analyze the causes of banking distress in Europe. We identify a set of indicators and thresholds that can help to distinguish sound banks from those vulnerable to financial distress.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2009/009Banks and bankingEuropean Union countriesBank soundnessimfBank supervisionimfBankingimfBanks and BankingimfBanks and bankingimfBanksimfCapital and Ownership StructureimfCrisis managementimfDepository InstitutionsimfDistressed institutionsimfEarly warning systemsimfEconomic & financial crises & disastersimfFinanceimfFinance: GeneralimfFinancial crisesimfFinancial Institutions and Services: GeneralimfFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationimfFinancial institutionsimfFinancial regulation and supervisionimfFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementimfFinancial Risk ManagementimfFinancial sector policy and analysisimfFinancial services industryimfFinancial services law & regulationimfFinancing PolicyimfGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationimfGoodwillimfIndustries: Financial ServicesimfLoan loss provisionsimfMicro Finance InstitutionsimfMortgagesimfState supervisionimfValue of FirmsimfEuropeEconomic conditionsUnited StatesimfBanks and bankingBank soundnessBank supervisionBankingBanks and BankingBanks and bankingBanksCapital and Ownership StructureCrisis managementDepository InstitutionsDistressed institutionsEarly warning systemsEconomic & financial crises & disastersFinanceFinance: GeneralFinancial crisesFinancial Institutions and Services: GeneralFinancial Institutions and Services: Government Policy and RegulationFinancial institutionsFinancial regulation and supervisionFinancial Risk and Risk ManagementFinancial Risk ManagementFinancial sector policy and analysisFinancial services industryFinancial services law & regulationFinancing PolicyGeneral Financial Markets: Government Policy and RegulationGoodwillIndustries: Financial ServicesLoan loss provisionsMicro Finance InstitutionsMortgagesState supervisionValue of Firms332.1068;332.10684Poghosyan Tigran1815823Cihak Martin1106217International Monetary Fund.DcWaIMFBOOK9910965824503321Distress in European Banks4371670UNINA
