The paper presents several conventional techniques for assessing competitiveness, namely the real exchange rate and recent trade performance. Several other measures are considered, in particular transport costs and governance measures, which may be more effective in capturing the obstacles to competitiveness posed by the poor security environment and weak institutions common to many post-conflict situations. The real exchange measure and trade measures suggest some mild erosion of competitiveness in recent years, while the other measures indicate that the competitiveness challenges faced by the Central African Republic are much deeper.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2006/303CompetitionCentral African RepublicForeign exchange ratesCentral African RepublicPostwar reconstructionCentral African RepublicCapacityimfCapitalimfCompetitionimfCurrencyimfExchange ratesimfFinanceimfFinance: GeneralimfForeign ExchangeimfForeign exchangeimfGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)imfIndustry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: GeneralimfInfrastructureimfIntangible CapitalimfInvestmentimfMacroeconomicsimfReal exchange ratesimfSaving and investmentimfTransportationimfCentral African RepublicCommerceCentral African RepublicEconomic conditionsCentral African RepublicEconomic policyBurkina FasoimfCompetitionForeign exchange ratesPostwar reconstructionCapacityCapitalCompetitionCurrencyExchange ratesFinanceFinance: GeneralForeign ExchangeForeign exchangeGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)Industry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: GeneralInfrastructureIntangible CapitalInvestmentMacroeconomicsReal exchange ratesSaving and investmentTransportationLewis Mark(Mark White)792112Bakhache Said1816039Kalonji Kadima1816040Nachega Jean-Claude1816041International Monetary Fund.African Dept.DcWaIMFBOOK9910965329203321Assessing Competitiveness After Conflict4371681UNINA
