After 1600, self-appointed investigators used the model of the land and cartographic surveys of the newly unified state to observe and order subjects such as agronomy, medicine, gastronomy, commerce, travel, and entertainment. They subsequently circulated their findings through a variety of commercially printed texts: maps, gazetteers, family encyclopedias, urban directories, travel guides, official personnel rosters, and instruction manuals for everything from farming to lovemaking. In this original and gracefully written book, Mary Elizabeth Berry considers the social processes that drove the information explosion of the 1600's. Inviting readers to examine the contours and meanings of this transformation, Berry provides a fascinating account of the conversion of the public from an object of state surveillance into a subject of self-knowledge. Japan in Print shows how, as investigators collected and disseminated richly diverse data, they came to presume in their audience a standard of cultural literacy that changed anonymous consumers into an "us" bound by common frames of reference. This shared space of knowledge made society visible to itself and in the process subverted notions of status hierarchy. Berry demonstrates that the new public texts projected a national collectivity characterized by universal access to markets, mobility, sociability, and self-fashioning.Asia--local studies/global themes ;12.PrintingJapanHistory17th centuryagronomy.asian history.cartography.commerce.common frames of reference.communication.cultural literacy.diverse data.early modern japan.early modern period.east asian culture.entertainment.gastronomy.japan.japanese culture.japanese society.markets.material culture.media studies.medicine.mobility.model of the land.national collectivity.print culture.self fashioning.self knowledge.sociability.state surveillance.status hierarchy.travel.PrintingHistory686.209520909032Berry Mary Elizabethauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut644593DE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910783670303321Japan in print3860652UNINA03664nam 2200661 a 450 991078253160332120230207225818.01-281-95702-X97866119570250-226-30926-610.7208/9780226309262(CKB)1000000000579047(EBL)408434(OCoLC)476229049(SSID)ssj0000234890(PQKBManifestationID)11208132(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000234890(PQKBWorkID)10243134(PQKB)10023902(StDuBDS)EDZ0000119082(MiAaPQ)EBC408434(DE-B1597)524271(OCoLC)1135588405(DE-B1597)9780226309262(Au-PeEL)EBL408434(CaPaEBR)ebr10266022(CaONFJC)MIL195702(EXLCZ)99100000000057904720070627d2008 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrRegionalism and the reading class[electronic resource] /Wendy GriswoldChicago University of Chicago Pressc20081 online resource (224 p.)Description based upon print version of record.0-226-30922-3 Includes bibliographical references and index.Place, regional culture, and literary regionalism -- The reading class -- Cowbirds in America -- Paradox in Italy -- State patronage in Norway and the U. S. -- Conclusion : the reading class and regionalism.Globalization and the Internet are smothering cultural regionalism, that sense of place that flourished in simpler times. These two villains are also prime suspects in the death of reading. Or so alarming reports about our homogenous and dumbed-down culture would have it, but as Regionalism and the Reading Class shows, neither of these claims stands up under scrutiny-quite the contrary. Wendy Griswold draws on cases from Italy, Norway, and the United States to show that fans of books form their own reading class, with a distinctive demographic profile separate from the general public. This reading class is modest in size but intense in its literary practices. Paradoxically these educated and mobile elites work hard to put down local roots by, among other strategies, exploring regional writing. Ultimately, due to the technological, economic, and political advantages they wield, cosmopolitan readers are able to celebrate, perpetuate, and reinvigorate local culture. Griswold's study will appeal to students of cultural sociology and the history of the book-and her findings will be welcome news to anyone worried about the future of reading or the eclipse of place. As the party ascends to power in Egypt, it is poised to adopt a new system of governance and state-society relations, the effects of which are likely to extend well beyond Egypt's national borders. This book examines the Brotherhood's visions and practices, from its inception in 1928, up to its response to the 2011 uprising, as it moves to redefine democracy along Islamic lines. Now available in a revised and updated edition, Edward J. Larson's highly-acclaimed study--which ranges from before the Scopes trial of 1925 tothe creationism disputes of the 1980s--offers the first comprehensive account of the educational and legal battles erupting from this persistent confrontation. Larson traces the origins of the dispute back to the late nineteenth century, a period marked by the scientific acceptance of evolution, the rise oCreationismEvolutionEvolution - Study and teaching - Law and legislation - United StatesEvolution (Biology)Evolution (Biology)Law and legislationStudy and teachingUnited StatesCreationismStudy and teachingLaw and legislationUnited StatesLaw - U.S. - GeneralHILCCLaw - U.SHILCCLaw, Politics & GovernmentHILCCCreationism.Evolution.Evolution - Study and teaching - Law and legislation - United States.Evolution (Biology).Evolution (Biology)Law and legislationStudy and teachingCreationismStudy and teachingLaw and legislationLaw - U.S. - GeneralLaw - U.S.Law, Politics & Government344.73/095 347.30495344.73095347.30495Larson Edward J903476AU-PeELAU-PeELAU-PeELBOOK9910964821603321Trial and Error4431425UNINA02051oas 2200709 a 450 991022920710332120250922213015.00707-2795(OCoLC)298233036(CONSER) 2009268205(CKB)991042728818190(EXLCZ)9999104272881819020090113b19831985 sy aengurbn|||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierWilliam Mitchell environmental law journal[St. Paul, Minn.] [Students of the William Mitchell Environmental Law Society]©1983-©19851 online resourceTitle from caption (Hein Online, viewed January 12, 2009).0737-2795 Environmental lawMinnesotaPeriodicalsEnvironmental lawUnited StatesPeriodicalsEnvironmental lawfast(OCoLC)fst00913122MilieurechtgttMinnesotafasthttps://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJyRCQh3BG678T9kW8XTpPUnited Statesfasthttps://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrqPeriodicals.fastPeriodicals.lcgftEnvironmental lawEnvironmental lawEnvironmental law.Milieurecht.344/.046/05342.44605William Mitchell Environmental Law Society.CLLCLLGAOTKFCUDNDOOCLCAOCLCQOCLCEOCLCQOCLCFOCLCOOCLCQOCLCAVT2OCLCQU3WOCLCLOCLCQOCLCLJOURNAL9910229207103321William Mitchell environmental law journal2260758UNINA03485nam 2200661Ia 450 991097521110332120251015145528.01-283-60433-797866139167850-300-15913-710.12987/9780300159134(CKB)2670000000241843(OCoLC)817540015(CaPaEBR)ebrary10602423(SSID)ssj0000739179(PQKBManifestationID)11930734(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000739179(PQKBWorkID)10686797(PQKB)11189637(MiAaPQ)EBC3421052(DE-B1597)485837(DE-B1597)9780300159134(Au-PeEL)EBL3421052(CaPaEBR)ebr10602423(CaONFJC)MIL391678(OCoLC)923600921(OCoLC)817540015(EXLCZ)99267000000024184320120419d2012 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrThe scientific Buddha his short and happy life /Donald S. The Death of the Scientific Buddha --Notes --IndexThis book tells the story of the Scientific Buddha, "born" in Europe in the 1800's but commonly confused with the Buddha born in India 2,500 years ago. The Scientific Buddha was sent into battle against Christian missionaries, who were proclaiming across Asia that Buddhism was a form of superstition. He proved the missionaries wrong, teaching a dharma that was in harmony with modern science. And his influence continues. Today his teaching of "mindfulness" is heralded as the cure for all manner of maladies, from depression to high blood pressure. In this potent critique, a well-known chronicler of the West's encounter with Buddhism demonstrates how the Scientific Buddha's teachings deviate in crucial ways from those of the far older Buddha of ancient India. Donald Lopez shows that the Western focus on the Scientific Buddha threatens to bleach Buddhism of its vibrancy, complexity, and power, even as the superficial focus on "mindfulness" turns Buddhism into merely the latest self-help movement. The Scientific Buddha has served his purpose, Lopez argues. It is now time for him to pass into nirvana. This is not to say, however, that the teachings of the ancient Buddha must be dismissed as mere cultural artifacts. They continue to present a potent challenge, even to our modern world.Terry lectures.Buddhism and scienceBuddhismBuddhism and science.Buddhism.294.3/365REL106000REL007010PHI028000SCI034000bisacshLopez Donald S.Jr.,1952-647459MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910975211103321The scientific Buddha4445417UNINA
