In many regions, valuable fish stocks have collapsed as a result of overfishing. Ill-conceived regulation also means that every year millions of tons of edible fish are thrown back dead into the sea. While an absence of established property rights means that wild fish are vulnerable to overfishing, the problem is greatly exacerbated by large subsidies. State intervention has created significant overcapacity in the industry and undermined the economic feedback mechanisms that help to protect stocks. This short book sets out a range of policy options to improve outcomes. As well as ending counterproductive subsidies, these include community-based management of coastal zones and the introduction of individual transferable quotas. The analysis is particularly relevant to the UK as it begins the process of withdrawal from the European Union. After decades of mismanagement under the Common Fisheries Policy, Brexit represents a major opportunity to adopt an economically rational approach that benefits the fishing industry, taxpayers and consumersFish tradeUnited StatesFishersUnited Statesfishery managementeurovocengmaritime economyeurovocengcommon fisheries policyeurovocengintervention policyeurovocengproduction surpluseurovocengUnited Kingdomeurovocengwithdrawal from the EUeurovocengFish tradeFishersfishery managementmaritime economycommon fisheries policyintervention policyproduction surplusUnited Kingdomwithdrawal from the EU338.37120097356.36.20EP-CLASSWellings RichardAligică Paul DragoșMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910822343003321Sea change2734658UNINA03633nam 22007094a 450 991096418820332120251116215727.09786611729349978128172934712817293459780300129014030012901710.12987/9780300129014(CKB)1000000000472016(EBL)3420113(SSID)ssj0000166955(PQKBManifestationID)11167687(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000166955(PQKBWorkID)10169046(PQKB)10413082(MiAaPQ)EBC3420113(DE-B1597)485291(OCoLC)1013951613(DE-B1597)9780300129014(Au-PeEL)EBL3420113(CaPaEBR)ebr10170803(CaONFJC)MIL172934(OCoLC)923590267(Perlego)1089533(OCoLC)1013951613(EXLCZ)99100000000047201620060208d2006 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierHamas politics, charity, and terrorism in the service of jihad /Matthew Levitt ; foreword by Dennis Ross1st ed.New Haven Yale University Pressc20061 online resource (xi, 324 pages)"Published in cooperation with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy."9780300110531 0300110537 Includes bibliographical references (p. 253-314) and index.Origins of the Hamas dawa -- Terror and the Hamas political leadership -- Economic jihad : how Hamas finances terror -- The logistics of terror : tactical uses of the dawa -- Teaching terror : how the dawa radicalizes Palestinian society -- Foreign funding of Hamas -- State support for Hamas -- Will Hamas target the West? -- Displacing the Hamas dawa. How does a group that operates terror cells and espouses violence become a ruling political party? How is the world to understand and respond to Hamas, the militant Islamist organization that Palestinian voters brought to power in the stunning election of January 2006?This important book provides the most fully researched assessment of Hamas ever written. Matthew Levitt, a counterterrorism expert with extensive field experience in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, draws aside the veil of legitimacy behind which Hamas hides. He presents concrete, detailed evidence from an extensive array of international intelligence materials, including recently declassified CIA, FBI, and Department of Homeland Security reports. Levitt demolishes the notion that Hamas' military, political, and social wings are distinct from one another and catalogues the alarming extent to which the organization's political and social welfare leaders support terror. He exposes Hamas as a unitary organization committed to a militant Islamist ideology, urges the international community to take heed, and offers well-considered ideas for countering the significant threat Hamas poses.Daʻwah (Islam)Suicide bombingsIsraelDaʻwah (Islam)Suicide bombings956.95/3044Levitt Matthew1970-1811862Ross Dennis626261Washington Institute for Near East Policy.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910964188203321Hamas4363997UNINA
