In this small Iupiaq community, flooding and erosion are forcing community members to consider relocation as the only possible solution for long-term safety. However, a tangled web of policy obstacles, lack of funding, and organizational challenges leaves the community without a clear way forward, creating serious questions of how to maintain cultural identity under the new climate regime. Elizabeth Marino analyzes this unique and grounded example of a warming world as a confluence of political injustice, histories of colonialism, global climate change, and contemporary development decisions. The book merges theoretical insights from disaster studies, political analysis, and passages from field notes into an eminently readable text for a wide audience. This is an ethnography of climate change; a glimpse into the lived experiences of a global phenomenon.Human beingsEffect of climate onAlaskaShishmarefEthnologyAlaskaShishmarefClimatic changesAlaskaShishmarefIndigenous peoplesAlaskaShishmarefEcologyClimatChangementsÉtats-UnisAlaska (États-Unis)ramEthnologieÉtats-UnisAlaska (États-Unis)ramHommeEffets du climatÉtats-UnisAlaska (États-Unis)ramUmsiedlunggndKulturelle IdentitätgndKüstegndKlimaänderunggndInyupiatgndErosiongndRemote-sensing mapsfast(OCoLC)fst01094488Ethnoecologyfast(OCoLC)fst00970226Human beingsEffect of climate onfast(OCoLC)fst00962839Ethnologyfast(OCoLC)fst00916106Climatic changesfast(OCoLC)fst00864229Refugies ecologiquesAlaskaShishmarefÉtudes de casJustice environnementaleAlaskaShishmarefÉtudes de casInupiat (Inuits)AlaskaShishmarefRelations avec l'ÉtatramInupiat (Inuits)DeplacementAlaskaShishmarefEthnologieAlaskaShishmarefHommeInfluence du climatAlaskaShishmarefClimatChangementsAspect anthropologiqueAlaskaShishmareframEthnoecologyAlaskaShishmarefClimatic changesAlaskaShishmarefEthnologyAlaskaShishmarefHuman beingsEffect of climate onAlaskaShishmarefShishmaref (Alaska)Remote-sensing mapsAlaskaShishmareffastShishmaref (Alaska)Conditions environnementalesShishmaref (Alaska)MapsSpatiocartes.Remote-sensing maps.Remote-sensing maps.Human beingsEffect of climate onEthnologyClimatic changesIndigenous peoplesEcology.ClimatChangementsEthnologieHommeEffets du climatUmsiedlung.Kulturelle Identität.Küste.Klimaänderung.Inyupiat.Erosion.Remote-sensing maps.Ethnoecology.Human beingsEffect of climate on.Ethnology.Climatic changes.Refugies ecologiquesJustice environnementaleInupiat (Inuits)Relations avec l'État.Inupiat (Inuits)DeplacementEthnologieHommeInfluence du climatClimatChangementsAspect anthropologiqueEthnoecologyClimatic changesEthnologyHuman beingsEffect of climate on304.2/5097986Marino Elizabethaut1145997MdBmJHUPMdBmJHUPBOOK9910956534403321Fierce Climate, Sacred Ground4358090UNINA03957nam 22006734a 450 991097460650332120200520144314.09780674039162067403916510.4159/9780674039162(CKB)1000000000786819(OCoLC)435542327(CaPaEBR)ebrary10314232(SSID)ssj0000217153(PQKBManifestationID)11197960(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000217153(PQKBWorkID)10202411(PQKB)11687814(MiAaPQ)EBC3300223(Au-PeEL)EBL3300223(CaPaEBR)ebr10314232(OCoLC)923109664(DE-B1597)589746(DE-B1597)9780674039162(OCoLC)1322125707(Perlego)1146953(EXLCZ)99100000000078681920040420d2004 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrOverconfidence and war the havoc and glory of positive illusions /Dominic D.P. This conundrum lies at the heart of the so-called "war puzzle": rational states should agree on their differences in power and thus not fight. But as Dominic Johnson argues in Overconfidence and War, states are no more rational than people, who are susceptible to exaggerated ideas of their own virtue, of their ability to control events, and of the future. By looking at this bias--called "positive illusions"--as it figures in evolutionary biology, psychology, and the politics of international conflict, this book offers compelling insights into why states wage war. Johnson traces the effects of positive illusions on four turning points in twentieth-century history: two that erupted into war (World War I and Vietnam); and two that did not (the Munich crisis and the Cuban missile crisis). Examining the two wars, he shows how positive illusions have filtered into politics, causing leaders to overestimate themselves and underestimate their adversaries--and to resort to violence to settle a conflict against unreasonable odds. In the Munich and Cuban missile crises, he shows how lessening positive illusions may allow leaders to pursue peaceful solutions. The human tendency toward overconfidence may have been favored by natural selection throughout our evolutionary history because of the advantages it conferred--heightening combat performance or improving one's ability to bluff an opponent. And yet, as this book suggests--and as the recent conflict in Iraq bears out--in the modern world the consequences of this evolutionary legacy are potentially deadly.WarPsychological aspectsWarCausesMilitary history, Modern20th centuryMilitary history, Modern21st centuryWarPsychological aspects.WarCauses.Military history, ModernMilitary history, Modern355.02/7Johnson Dominic D. Andrew Walder combines historical narrative with sociological analysis as he explores the radical student movement’s crippling factionalism, devastating social impact, and ultimate failure. Most accounts of the movement have portrayed a struggle among Red Guards as a social conflict that pitted privileged “conservative” students against socially marginalized “radicals” who sought to change an oppressive social and political system. Walder employs newly available documentary evidence and the recent memoirs of former Red Guard leaders and members to demonstrate that on both sides of the bitter conflict were students from comparable socioeconomic backgrounds, who shared similar—largely defensive—motivations. The intensity of the conflict and the depth of the divisions were an expression of authoritarian political structures that continued to exert an irresistible pull on student motives and actions, even in the midst of their rebellion. Walder’s nuanced account challenges the main themes of an entire generation of scholarship about the social conflicts of China’s Cultural Revolution, shedding light on the most tragic and poorly understood period of recent Chinese history.Protest movementsChinaBeijingHistory20th centuryStudent movementsChinaBeijingHistory20th centuryPolitical violenceChinaBeijingHistory20th centurySocial conflictChinaBeijingHistory20th centuryChinaHistoryCultural Revolution, 1966-1976Beijing (China)History20th centuryBeijing (China)Social conditions20th centuryBeijing (China)Politics and government20th centuryProtest movementsHistoryStudent movementsHistoryPolitical violenceHistorySocial conflictHistory951.05/6Walder Andrew G(Andrew George),1953-120131MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910962373603321Fractured rebellion4366881UNINA
