Olaf Dammann explores recent accounts of medicine as ineffective and suggests that the impression that medicine does not achieve its goal is, at least in part, due to the aleatoric (natural) uncertainty of biomedical processes and the subsequent epistemic (cognitive) uncertainty of those who desire solid information about such processes. Dammann shows how concepts like inference, explanation, and causometry help mitigate this disconnect. He points toward the possibility that some of the statistically rigid and formalized approaches (such as the randomized controlled trial as the gold standard for the justification of medical interventions) might better be replaced by approaches that emphasize the coherence of evidence and the people’s needs for helpful health interventions (auxiliarianism). Olaf Dammann is professor of Public Health and Community Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, USA. His main fields of research are philosophy of health science and perinatal epidemiology. .MedicinePhilosophyMetaphysicsEpidemiologySocial medicineClinical health psychologyPhilosophy of MedicineMetaphysicsEpidemiologyMedical SociologyHealth PsychologyMedicinePhilosophy.Metaphysics.Epidemiology.Social medicine.Clinical health psychology.Philosophy of Medicine.Metaphysics.Epidemiology.Medical Sociology.Health Psychology.610.1Dammann Olafauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut782398MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910992772203321Uncertainty and Explanation in Medicine and the Health Sciences4349841UNINA07134nam 2200793Ka 450 991095984170332120110201105442.097866129869499781282986947128298694597808572448640857244868(CKB)2560000000052593(EBL)655558(OCoLC)699810111(SSID)ssj0000467733(PQKBManifestationID)11272106(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000467733(PQKBWorkID)10497997(PQKB)11079139(Au-PeEL)EBL655558(CaPaEBR)ebr10445342(CaONFJC)MIL298694(UtOrBLW)bslw06919614(PPN)170243753(Perlego)387100(MiAaPQ)EBC655558(EXLCZ)99256000000005259320110201d2010 uy 0engurun|||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierClimate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction an Asian perspectives /edited Rajib Shaw, Juan M. Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction : key challenges and ways forward / Juan Pulhin, Rajib Shaw, Joy Pereira.Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) are closely associated. After the Bali Conference of Parties (COP) 2007, there has been significant awareness in global and national level to make collective focus on CCA and DRR. There exists some literature on CCA, however, the linkages with the DRR is not clear. The Nairobi Work Program (NWP), facilitated by the UNFCCC (UN Framework of Convention on Climate change) and the Parties have found specific scope of actions to enhance the CCA and DRR agenda in developing countries. Different national and international agencies have started undertaking initiatives on this aspect but very few concrete measures have been implemented. At this onset, the book provides 19 case studies from 13 countries and regions in Asia. The case studies highlight different aspects of CCA-DRR entry points, like policy interventions, drought risk management, coastal management, agro-forestry, lagoon management, livelihood issues and risk communication. This book is a complimentary volume of Volume 4: Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction: Issues and Challenges, which focuses on the theory of CCA and DRR and its enabling environment, CCA-DRR linkages framework of governance, education and technology, different entry points like urban, coast, forest, river, and housing; and finally provided a regional perspective of developing countries. The primary targets of this book are the students and researchers in the field of disaster risk reduction, climate change, environmental studies and related risks. The book will help them to have a better idea on the current trend of research in the field, and will provide basic knowledge on this important topic. The other target group is practitioners and policy makers for applying the collective knowledge into policy and decision making.Community, environment and disaster risk management ;5.NatureEcosystems & HabitatsRiversbisacshNatureEcologybisacshEnvironmentalist thought & ideologybicsscDrought & water supplybicsscClimate change mitigationAsiaEmergency managementAsiaNatureEcosystems & HabitatsRivers.NatureEcology.Environmentalist thought & ideology.Drought & water supply.Climate change mitigationEmergency management363.73874095551.6Shaw Rajib1474599Pulhin Juan M1858303Pereira Joy Jacqueline1858304UtOrBLWUtOrBLWBOOK9910959841703321Climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction4460432UNINA
