They center around the following hypotheses: Ideophones are universal; and constitute a grammatical category in all languages of the world; ideophones and similar words have a special dramaturgic function that differs from all other word classes: they simulate an event, an emotion, a perception through language. In addition to this unique function, a good number of formal parallels can be observed. The languages dealt with here display strikingly similar patterns of derivational processes involving ideophones. An equally widespread common feature is the introduction of ideophones via a verbum dicendi or complementizer. Another observation concerns the sound-symbolic behavior of ideophones. Thus the word formation of ideophones differs from other words in their tendency for iconicity and sound-symbolism. Finally it is made clear that ideophones are part of spoken language - the language register, where gestures are used - rather than written language.Typological studies in language ;v. 44.Grammar, Comparative and generalIdeophoneCongressesGrammar, Comparative and generalIdeophone415ET 200rvkVoeltz Erhard Friedrich Karl1943-1801455Kilian-Hatz Christa1801456International Symposium on Ideophones(1st :1999 :Sankt Augustin, Germany)MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910965817703321Ideophones4346707UNINA04350nam 22006374a 450 991095870820332120251117115050.0978052092740705209274009781597345217159734521010.1525/9780520927407(CKB)111087027178600(EBL)223258(OCoLC)475927478(SSID)ssj0000116931(PQKBManifestationID)11143545(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000116931(PQKBWorkID)10043033(PQKB)11159611(DE-B1597)519122(OCoLC)52842619(DE-B1597)9780520927407(Au-PeEL)EBL223258(CaPaEBR)ebr10048961(Perlego)550869(MiAaPQ)EBC223258(EXLCZ)9911108702717860020010411d2002 ub 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrCalled by the wild the autobiography of a conservationist /Raymond F. Finale --Bibliography --IndexA pioneer in international conservation and wildlife ecology, Raymond Dasmann published his first book, the influential text Environmental Conservation, when the term "environment" was little known and "conservation" to most people simply meant keeping or storing. This delightful memoir tells the story of an unpretentious man who helped create and shape today's environmental movement. Ranging from Dasmann's travels to ecological hotspots around the world to his development of concepts such as bioregionalism and ecotourism, this autobiography is a story of international conservation action and intrigue, a moving love story, and a gripping chronicle of an exceptional life.Dasmann takes us from his boyhood days in San Francisco in the early 1920's to his action-packed military service in Australia during World War II, where he met his future wife, Elizabeth. After returning to the United States, Dasmann received his doctorate as a conservation biologist when the field was just being developed. Dasmann left the safety of academia to work with conservation organizations around the world, including the United Nations, and has done fieldwork in Africa, Sri Lanka, the Caribbean, and California. This book is both a memoir and an account of how Dasmann's thinking developed around issues that are vitally important today. In engaging conversational language, he shares his thoughts on issues he has grappled with throughout his life, such as population growth and the question of how sustainability can be measured, understood, and regained. Called by the Wild tells the story of an inspirational risk taker who reminds us that "the earth is the only known nature reserve in the entire universe" and that we must learn to treat it as such.ConservationistsUnited StatesBiographyConservationists333.7/2/092BDasmann Raymond F.1919-2002.1891149MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910958708203321Called by the wild4533903UNINA
