Excerpts from the Statute of Amnesty International -- Notes -- IndexWhy have conservatives fared so much better than progressives in recent decades, even though polls show no significant move to the right in public opinion? Cultural Dilemmas of Progressive Politics highlights one reason: that progressives often adopt impoverished modes of discourse, ceding the moral high ground to their conservative rivals. Stephen Hart also shows that some progressive groups are pioneering more robust ways of talking about their issues and values, providing examples other progressives could emulate. Through case studies of grassroots movements-particularly the economic justice work carried on by congregation-based community organizing and the pursuit of human rights by local members of Amnesty International-Hart shows how these groups develop distinctive ways of talking about politics and create characteristic stories, ceremonies, and practices. According to Hart, the way people engage in politics matters just as much as the content of their ideas: when activists make the moral basis for their activism clear, engage issues with passion, and articulate a unified social vision, they challenge the recent ascendancy of conservative discourse. On the basis of these case studies, Hart addresses currently debated topics such as individualism in America and whether strains of political thought strongly informed by religion and moral values are compatible with tolerance and liberty.Morality and society.Political participationUnited StatesSocial movementsUnited StatesReligion and politicsUnited StatesPolitical participationSocial movementsReligion and politics323/.042/0973Hart Stephen1946-1808341MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910956157003321Cultural dilemmas of progressive politics4358523UNINA04789nam 2200889Ia 450 991097502190332120251117073944.01-282-35328-497866123532840-300-15601-410.12987/9780300156010(CKB)2430000000010786(EBL)3420498(SSID)ssj0000307527(PQKBManifestationID)11225262(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000307527(PQKBWorkID)10244383(PQKB)11066040(DE-B1597)486096(OCoLC)1024005480(OCoLC)1029821675(OCoLC)1032692689(OCoLC)1037979904(OCoLC)1041972947(OCoLC)1046605439(OCoLC)1047005309(OCoLC)1049623742(OCoLC)1054871589(DE-B1597)9780300156010(Au-PeEL)EBL3420498(CaPaEBR)ebr10348392(CaONFJC)MIL235328(OCoLC)923593827(MiAaPQ)EBC3420498(OCoLC)1054871589(OCoLC)1049623742(OCoLC)1047005309(OCoLC)1046605439(OCoLC)1041972947(OCoLC)1037979904(OCoLC)1032692689(OCoLC)1029821675(OCoLC)1024005480(OCoLC)593239918(EXLCZ)99243000000001078620090327d2009 uy 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrA question of command counterinsurgency from the Civil War to Iraq /Mark Moyar ; foreword by Donald Kagan and Frederick Kagan1st ed.New Haven Yale University Pressc20091 online resource (384 p.)Yale library of military historyDescription based upon print version of record.0-300-15276-0 Includes bibliographical references and index.Frontmatter -- Contents -- Foreword -- Preface -- Acknowledgments -- 1. How to Win -- Appendix: Counterinsurgency Leadership Survey -- Notes -- Select Bibliography -- IndexAccording to the prevailing view of counterinsurgency, the key to defeating insurgents is selecting methods that will win the people's hearts and minds. The hearts-and-minds theory permeates not only most counterinsurgency books of the twenty-first century but the U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual, the U.S. military's foremost text on counterinsurgency. Mark Moyar assails this conventional wisdom, asserting that the key to counterinsurgency is selecting commanders who have superior leadership abilities. Whereas the hearts-and-minds school recommends allocating much labor and treasure to economic, social, and political reforms, Moyar advocates concentrating resources on security, civil administration, and leadership development.Moyar presents a wide-ranging history of counterinsurgency, from the Civil War and Reconstruction to Afghanistan and Iraq, that draws on the historical record and interviews with hundreds of counterinsurgency veterans, including top leaders in today's armed forces. Through a series of case studies, Moyar identifies the ten critical attributes of counterinsurgency leadership and reveals why these attributes have been much more prevalent in some organizations than others. He explains how the U.S. military and America's allies in Afghanistan and Iraq should revamp their personnel systems in order to elevate more individuals with those attributes.A Question of Command will reshape the study and practice of counterinsurgency warfare. With counterinsurgency now one of the most pressing issues facing the United States, this book is a must-read for policymakers, military officers, and citizens.Yale library of military history.CounterinsurgencyHistoryCounterinsurgencyUnited StatesHistoryCommand of troopsCounterinsurgencyHistory.CounterinsurgencyHistory.Command of troops.355.02/180973Moyar Mark1971-473463MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910975021903321A question of command4529389UNINA
