Labeled "crazy girl" for much of her childhood, Anna suffered physical and emotional damage at the hands of the adults who were supposed to love and protect her. Committed to various mental institutions by her family, at sixteen Anna was finally able to escape her chaotic home life and enter a foster home. As an effort toward recovery and self-affirmation as well as a powerful plea on behalf of other abused children, Anna wrote this memoir while the experience was fresh and the emotions were still raw and unhealed. Her story is a powerful tale of survival. "A teen's raw, in-your-face chronicle of events almost as they were happening. As such, it's unforgettable. . . . Michener's story gives voice to the thousands of children and adolescents trapped in 'the system,' biding their time until their 18th birthdays. A candid and unstinting tell-all."-Kirkus Reviews "Extraordinary. . . . Michener's expressive writing does justice to a topic that is clearly very disturbing to her personally and communicates a profoundly important message on behalf of all abused and neglected children."-Booklist "An important book, painful to read, but essential if other children in similar situations are to be saved."-Library Journal "An innocent child's account of 16 years in hell and of the terrible wrongs inflicted on children who are without rights or caring advocates."-Choice "[Michener] emerges as a compelling and courageous advocate for children and their welfare-she's a young writer with an extraordinary voice. "Feminist Bookstore News "Quite simply one of the best, most compelling, well-written autobiographies published in years. . . . Remember the name. We have not heard the last of Anna Michener."-Myree Whitfield, Melbourne Herald-Sun, cover storyAbused childrenUnited StatesBiographyPsychologically abused childrenUnited StatesBiographyAbused childrenPsychologically abused children362.76/092BMichener Anna J.1977-1810993MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910956126203321Becoming Anna4362581UNINA05909nam 22008175 450 991048453060332120251226203151.03-540-46544-810.1007/11893011(CKB)1000000000283908(SSID)ssj0000318601(PQKBManifestationID)11211584(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000318601(PQKBWorkID)10311009(PQKB)10064535(DE-He213)978-3-540-46544-7(MiAaPQ)EBC3068682(PPN)123139082(EXLCZ)99100000000028390820110117d2006 u| 0engurnn|008mamaatxtccrKnowledge-Based Intelligent Information and Engineering Systems 10th International Conference, KES 2006, Bournemouth, UK, October 9-11 2006, Proceedings, Part III /edited by Bogdan Gabrys1st ed. 2006.Berlin, Heidelberg :Springer Berlin Heidelberg :Imprint: Springer,2006.1 online resource (XXXII, 1301 p.) This is a special KES conference, as it is the 10th in the series, and as such, it represents an occasion for celebration and an opportunity for reflection. The first KES conference was held in 1997 and was organised by the KES conference founder, Lakhmi Jain. In 1997, 1998 and 1999 the KES conferences were held in Adelaide, Australia. In 2000 the conference moved out of Australia to be held in Brighton, UK; in 2001 it was in Osaka, Japan; in 2002, Crema near Milan, Italy; in 2003, Oxford, UK; in 2004, Wellington, New Zealand; and in 2005, Melbourne, Australia. The next two conferences are planned to be in Italy and Croatia. Delegate numbers have grown from about 100 in 1997, to a regular figure in excess of 500. The conference attracts delegates from many different countries, in Europe, Australasia, the Pacific Rim, Asia and the Americas, and may truly be said to be ‘International’. Formed in 2001, KES International has developed into a worldwide organisation that provides a professional community for researchers in the discipline of knowledge-based and intelligent engineering and information systems, and through this, opportunities for publication, networking and interaction.Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence,2945-9141 ;4253Artificial intelligenceApplication softwareInformation storage and retrieval systemsInformation technologyManagementComputers and civilizationElectronic data processingManagementArtificial IntelligenceComputer and Information Systems ApplicationsInformation Storage and RetrievalComputer Application in Administrative Data ProcessingComputers and SocietyIT OperationsArtificial intelligence.Application software.Information storage and retrieval systems.Information technologyManagement.Computers and civilization.Electronic data processingManagement.Artificial Intelligence.Computer and Information Systems Applications.Information Storage and Retrieval.Computer Application in Administrative Data Processing.Computers and Society.IT Operations.006.3Gabrys Bogdan1756357Howlett Robert J.1954-867491Jain L.
